the world and over a long period of time. 
Given a more detailed history, might we expect some proponents of the custom to just tell

us how come it was done?

So, why did they stop?

My thought is it puts the crown of nervous system right up through the crown chakra which might make a bridge to elevated awareness and lead to psycho spiritual enhancement.

Probably for the priestly castes.
