Why would people do it?

I remember this from a while ago. Im sure most of you are familiar with it...

It's even been discussed here...

I don't believe his tale personally but it got me thinking. Why would somebody get amazing evidence of something that is such a mystery and just stash it away? I can't see people acting this way. It makes me wonder though. What if somebody has gotten some very spectacular evidence but for whatever reason decided it should never see the light of day and tucked it away in there attic or something. Or even destroyed it. I recall a story (i dont know if its true or not) of a bigfoot caught on a surveillance camera at a casino or something, and they destroyed the footage. The guy says he just doesn't care if anybody sees the tape or not. How can this be?

I think if you don't believe in Sasquatch, even footage on a grainy B&W surveillance camera isn't going to phase you. You would never convince them that it was worth a look see. Just my .02$

There are so many fake vidoes out there, proving a new vidoe is real will be a chore. If BF is filmed doing some superhuman feat such as breaking trees, chasing down a deer, or jumping off a rock then the video will be acceptable.

"It can be" that he knows what it is & has no desire to put himself through the scorn, ridicule, & accusations of hoaxing that he would face by making it public.

No good deed ever goes unpunished.

^^^ Yea this was my first thought too Sasfooty.

Specifically regarding video "evidence":

As a believer myself, I am admittedly tough (skeptical) on many of the numerous video footage's I've seen.

Part of that has to be broken down into two separate situations though.

Obvious hoax's like the recent one "knobby" that made it on to national news segments (FOX etc), and are either the videographer being complicit, or having filmed someone perpetuating a hoax. These are easy because its SO obvious - think "Butchykid" quality from youtube.

The more difficult one's are the "Marble Mountain" types- where I have a very solid feeling that its not a hoax, but a simple mis-identification.

Difficult in the sense that the video is inconclusive enough to bolster the argument of the hardened skeptic and passionate believer alike. (They both see and identify things in it that further their argument).

Ultimately, as many have said before me, the only true "good evidence" that will ever answer the question completely is going to be a large hairy corpse, lying on a steel table somewhere.

That it has to come to that, is kind of sad. But if people truly do want recognition of species, and the protections that would most likely come with it- that's probably what its going to take.

That someone having found said corpse in the woods, or hit it with their semi-truck, and then take steps to cover it up and conceal it from the world- makes no sense to me personally.

Devil's Adovacte: As I've seen this question here before. Why are they obligated to share. There could be any one of a number of sensitivity considerations involved.

That's right. Those pictures could be of "somebody" that is a friend, who doesn't want their picture on the internet.

I think we have to understand that for the majority, this subject just isn't that important..

Add the fact that it's so taboo which may intimidate regular people who have some good stuff but wouldn't be too sure on how to " release " it in the slightest..

For others, they may smell some $$ although they're not sure how much, like this Guy maybe, but when it doesn't materialise he kind of gives up on it..

I like this Photo a lot personally.. :)

The average Joe couldn't care less about the science.

And to be honest: I deeply care about the science, but if I had incontrovertible proof, or even just compelling new evidence, I'd want to see some serious green for my luck in acquiring the evidence, and for the inevitable headaches after releasing it.

Imagine if you were in a job where the ability to deal with things analytically, rationally and discretely were a requirement, and then your name gets associated with "Bigfoot!!!!".

Regardless of how the evidence played out, short term you could face losing your job.

I have videos. One where it you can hear a bf say something and one where you can see one walking along a big branch up in a large tree. Not exactly the holy grail, but I think I get why you'd sit on it.

1) When I first started out, I would have shown my videos around, but not no more! At this point, I have been mocked and ridiculed on the internet by a bunch of rude folks who got their ideas about bf from Hollywood movies and the National Enquirer. Less than knowledgeable to say the least. I no longer really have that much interest in sharing, no matter what.

2) I would never let any well known bf organizatons of field researchers near my pics or videos. IMO They have too much time and money tied up in finding sasquatch to ever let anyone else approach that mark if they can help it.

If you post evidence online, they will rip it to shreds and make you a laughingstock. If I had solid gold evidence, I would hire bodyguards, just in case. IMO.

You can't even mention the DNA evidence / Ketchum thing on discussion threads on some sites. Can't even mention it. So that tells you how they work. They sound like nice people, eh?

3) I wanted to know about bigfoot. I now know what BF is, I know where there are, and I can take their picture any time I want. It's not that big a deal to me anymore.

4) I might upload my images and vid if this site's gallery would let me, but it usually won't. It has ceased to be worth the time and effort. How come I can post pics fine on threads, but not the gallery? shheesh. Youtube, same thing. Don't know what the problem is.

Ah, but here is the kicker. This is just a little insignificant drop in the bucket. A nothing. I only been doin' this less than a year. Most real researchers sit on evidence of more important kinds and know stuff they can't even say because it's not worth suffering through another attack by those unenlightened folks and assault from the BF hierarchy of self appointed experts.

Well that's easy to answer, some folks don't live or die, breathe or are consumed by providing the "holy grail" of BF proof. As difficult of a concept as this is, some folks just don't care. Lots of folks I'm sure have amazingly rare footage of endangerd critters and they equally are in a box in someone's attic. Not everyone is involved in BF as a hobby, or scientific pursuit.....to be blunt, they have quite busy & full lives and just don't care. ;)

I have my doubts about that. I hear a lot of talk, but see absolute caca for footage from anyone not named Patterson or Gimlin.

If the footage is privately held by families who in all honesty don't care, exactly did you figure on prying it out of their attic's to be viewed?

...and a case of Geritol goes to the dapper fellow if he's willing to go house to house with me asking to see everyone's old family photo's!!! :D It'll be like American Pickers, only without the fancy van.
