Mr. Morris generally repeats what he told Greg Long (in the execrable book The Making of Bigfoot) with some minor variations.

1) He does not state when he received the phone call from Roger Patterson.

2) He adds a new claim that Roger Patterson "wanted something more like a Neanderthal."  

3) He states that the price of his suits were $450 rather than the $435 he told Greg Long and the $750 reflected in advertisements from 1967.

4) He specifies that the second phone call from Roger Patterson was two weeks after the first. 

5) He adds new claims that he told Roger Patterson to use hairspray to hold down the Dynel fur over the zipper and to use "stuffing" to make the suit look bulkier.

6) Philip Morris decided that it was okay to identify his suit after Roger Patterson's death in the 1980s.  

***** The Torso of the Suit *****

Philip Morris stated that:

- The torso had a 36-inch zipper running down the back from the neck to the crotch.  449.  The zipper was commonly used in automobiles with a convertible top.  450.    

- The torso’s plastic chest (see pictures) consisted of a 1-inch-thick layer of foam rubber sandwiched between two layers of black latex; it was used to “add bulk” to the suit.  449 – 450.

- The heavy-duty zipper and latex chest piece were sewed into the Dynel fur at a tent and awning store “using a powerful” sewing machine.  450.   

- Bias fabric tape was added around the latex chest during the sewing to prevent it from tearing loose from the Dynel fur.  450. 

- The arms and legs of the torso were cut long, so that the suit would fit loosely.  450.  Mr. Morris also described the arms as “extra long.”  456.  However, the arms were not long enough to suit Roger Patterson’s purpose.  447.

- The suit was not made to fit a person tightly.  450, 451.  Roger apparently was concerned that the suit’s shoulders did not have realistic bulk.  448.  Putting shoulder pads in his suit would put the shoulders in the way of Patty’s jaw.  452.

- The suit’s crotch usually hung loose and low.  450.    

- Philip Morris did not state that the head, hands, or feet of the suit attached to the torso.  Instead, the Dynel fur on the head simply covered the neck area of the torso (see below) and the torso’s arms and legs covered the hands (gloves) and feet (slippers).  450.  The fur from the six different pieces could be combed together to hide the individual pieces.  450.  The proper way to comb the hair was to “tease it” rather than to comb it down flat.  453.        

***** The Head of the Suit *****

Philip Morris stated that:

- The head, hands, and feet were made of black latex with Dynel fur glued to them.  449. 

- The head consisted of two layers of latex sandwiching a layer of foam rubber with Dynel fur glued onto the hood; this hood draped over the neck, shoulders, and sides and back of the head of the person wearing it.  450. 

- A person wearing the head often reported feeling claustrophobic.  452.    

- The face had an immovable mouth and simple eye holes.  450.  The eye holes did not completely cover the face of the person wearing the suit.  448. 

- The face of the suit was glued to the hood of the suit.  450.  It could have been pulled out and replaced with a different mask.  458.    

- A person wearing the suit could only turn their head about a quarter of the way around; in order to see behind them, the wearer would have to turn their head, shoulders, and hips.  452. 

- The mask in the Patterson-Gimlin film is not the suit’s mask.  457.  The “mask” used on Patty’s “suit” would have to been adhered directly to the actor’s face with spirit gum.  457.  The “mask” looks “really close” to the actor’s face and fits well around the eyes.  458. 

- Only a professional make-up artist could have made Patty’s “mask” blend into the actor’s face so well and that make-up artist would have had to have been present at the film site.  458. 

- It appears that Mr. Morris states that Patty’s mask has “age lines.”  459. 

***** The Feet and Hands of the Suit *****

Philip Morris stated that:

- The head, hands, and feet were made of black latex with Dynel fur glued to them.  449. 

- The feet were made to fit a size 10 to size 12 shoe and were 14 inches long.  451. 

- The soles of the feet were made from flat pieces of neoprene cut to the size and shape of the feet and glued to the latex.  449.  The neoprene was black.  463.  The neoprene attached as soles was about 14 inches long.  451.  The neoprene reached from the heel to the toes.  463. 

Comment: Google states that size 10 shoes are about 10&½ inches long while size 12 shoes are about 11&½ inches long. 

- The shape of the feet made for his gorilla suit did not match the tracks left by Patty.  451.

- The heels of the suit’s feet were square.  456. 

- He made his feet with and without fur; even the feet with fur were not entirely covered.  463. 

- The feet in his suits were long so that an actor could put his feet inside; he didn’t know the shoe size of the person buying a suit.  462.

- The feet were like slippers and could be stuffed in the front if they were too long.  462.   

- The feet of his suit were similar to long clown feet in that a person wearing them could not put the ball of their feet down first without stumbling.  452.   

- The hands of his suit were gloves.  449.  They could be screwed on to a stick to make the arms longer.  448. 

***** General Information and Background *****

Philip Morris stated that:

- He was amazed at the extent that Roger Patterson went with the details of Patty’s face (mask) since a person in 1967 could not anticipate the way photos could be analyzed later and also because the film was taken too far away to see details.  457. 

- He began to make gorilla suits because there were no reasonably priced gorilla suits available in the United States in the late 1950s.  445. 

- His company made one to three suits a month and the process of making each suit took at least one week.  459; emphasis added.  In August 1967 his gorilla suits sold for $335 but he later raised the price to $435.  446. 

Comment: The December 1967 advertisement provided by Mr. Morris contradicts this statement as it lists the price of a gorilla suit as $435, reduced from $750.  447, 460.

- He did not make suits fitted to the buyer; they were one size fits all.  462.  He sold Roger Patterson “a standard suit,” which was shipped [from North Carolina] to Roger [in Washington] by parcel post.  446.  

- He believed that Roger Patterson found the phone number for the Morris Magic Company in an advertisement in Amusement Business magazine.

Comment: The December 1967 advertisement provided by Mr. Morris contradicts this statement; it does not include a phone number.  447. 

- In a follow-up phone call, Roger Patterson requested extra “gorilla fur,” which Mr. Morris apparently sent him for free.  448.  Mr. Morris speculated that Roger used this “fur” on a person’s cheeks or to add more fur to the feet and hands.  459.      

- His suit could be worn by a person up to six feet tall.  451. 

- He manufactured his gorilla suits from either black or brown Dynel.  447, 449.  Dynel is a material consisting of nylon threads driven through a cloth backing; if grouped together tightly enough, the Dynel threads looked like plush fur.  449. 

- He only used brown Dynel in the 1960s because that color contrasted better against the background typically used in carnival sideshows.  449. 

- The color of his suits was uniform; there were not any differences or highlights in the fur.  456. 

- He made a white gorilla suit that was used in the 1971 James Bond film, Diamonds are Forever.  449

Comment: The gorilla in Diamonds are Forever is black, contradicting Mr. Morris’s statement.  See the suit at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpCFU_ZBMW8. 

- He never made suits with female breasts; however, the plastic chest pieces “stuck out several inches.  453. 

- The latex used for the suit (see below) was normally honeydew colored; black dye had to be added to make it look like a gorilla’s skin.  450. 

- His gorilla suit consisted of six (6) separate pieces: One head, one torso (the body, arms, and legs), two hands, and two feet.  449. 

- His gorilla suit weighed twenty to twenty-five pounds.  452.

On page 448, Philip Morris states "... Anyway, a couple of months later, October '67, I was watching TV, and this film is being shown and I see my gorilla suit...."  On page 464, Morris confirms that he saw the P-G film on TV at his home "at Kistler Avenue" in Charlotte, North Carolina.

According to Todd Prescott's video, Patterson-Gimlin Film—first showings at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9I4pnLFhrqg&list=LL, the first showing of any extract of the P-G film on television was on a local Yakima TV station, KIMA.  While the date that this news show aired is unclear, it appears highly unlikely given the technology of the day that any east coast television show ran the P-G film which Morris claimed that he saw.

On page 446, Morris begins recounting the phone call "around August" he supposedly received from a man who identified himself as Roger Patterson, a rodeo cowboy.  While describing the back and forth between himself and Patterson, Morris surmises (in other words, guesses) that Patterson found his company's advertisement in a weekly magazine called Amusement Business.  See p. 448.  

Amusement Business was published weekly; the issues published on August 12 and August 26, 1967, were Volume 79, Issues 31 and 33 respectively.  Thus, the earliest issue which Roger Patterson could have seen this advertisement based on Philip Morris and Greg Long's speculation was the August 5, 1967 issue.  

Philip Morris provided Greg Long with a photograph of "the exact same type of gorilla suit Roger Patterson Roger Patterson bought ... in or about August 1967."  These are the words of either Greg Long or Philip Morris.  Here is that photograph from Greg Long's book, included in this post for the limited purpose of reporting and commenting on, and critically evaluating, Philip Morris’s claim. 

Forums member Apeman found an article which gave credit for the ape suit in a 1967 movie called The Perils of Pauline to the Morris Costume Company.  There does appear to be a similarity, although IMDb identifies Marcel Delgado as the creator of that suit.  

Morris advertised his gorilla suits in Amusement Business magazine and speculated that because the magazine carried about rodeo shows and personalities, Roger Patterson saw an advertisement for his gorilla suits in "an August 1967 issue" of the magazine.  Morris goes on to say that he first received a phone call from Roger Patterson inquiring about a Morris gorilla suit around August 1967.  Morris states that he was selling gorilla suits "back then" (i.e., in 1967) for $335 but later raised their price $435.  However, a copy of the advertisement from the December 1967 issue of Amusement Business (provided by Morris to Long) shows that Morris's gorilla suits had been priced at $750 and were reduced in December to $435.¹       

The Morris Costume Company did not receive much, if any, attention in the press until 1980.  The earliest significant article was published in The Daily Inter Lake of Kalispell, Montana, on August 13, 1980.  Seems like making the best Bigfoot costume ever would have been worth mentioning.

The company was also mentioned in the Daily American Republic of Poplar Bluff, Missouri on November 10, 1980.  Seems like making the best Bigfoot costume ever would have been worth mentioning.

The November 4, 1982 article in The Daily Star of Hammond, Louisiana included a picture of Philip Morris with some of his finest creations.  Seems like a replica of the best Bigfoot costume ever would have been included in this group. 

¹ I've located a museum that claims to have archives of Amusement Business magazine and requested copies of certain things from two August 1967 issues. 

An abbreviated autobiography of Philip Morris can be found at https://www.circusesandsideshows.com/performers/phillipmorris.html.  It should be acknowledged that Philip Morris was apparently a talented and hard-working entertainer.  He was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan and was performing publicly as a magician at a young age, as shown in this article from The Kalamazoo Gazette on October 21, 1953.  

In 1960 Philip Morris started, and starred in, Dr. Evil's Horror Theater - a show like Svengoolie, Elvira Mistress of the Dark, and Chilly Billy Cardille, where hosts showed old horror movies and interjected humor (of a sort).  This photo shows Philip Morris (seated) and may or may not include one of his gorilla costumes. 
 

By 1967 and 1968, Philip Morris was performing his Wonderful World of Fantasy nationwide, a show which continued into the 1970s. 

Morris told Greg Long that he began making gorilla costumes in the basement of his house and was selling them to circuses and vaudeville shows which could not afford the high price of a Hollywood gorilla suit (which were usually owned by the actors who played gorillas themself).  It is one of these gorilla suits that was allegedly used by Roger Patterson to create Patty. 

¹  Philip Morris apparently first claimed to have sold Roger Patterson a gorilla costume during a August 16, 2002 interview on WBT-AM, Charlotte, North Carolina radio.  He was also interviewed, apparently briefly, on the issue by Ormon Grimsby on September 16, 2009.  See http://www.horrorhostgraveyard.com/2009/09/ormon-grimsby-interviews-dr-evil.html.  This interview was identified by Forums member Apeman; however the link to the actual interview (http://mcftv.com/) is now dead.  

Roger Patterson was obviously taking reported Bigfoot encounters seriously for some time.

While this film precedes the P-G film by several years, there is no evidence that news of the film reached the state of Washington in 1964.

I have requested a reprint from Reader's Digest, but have not received it to date.  Therefore, I'll use the following extract from Bobbi Short's (RIP) Bigfoot Encounters website at http://www.bigfootencounters.com/, which includes what appears to be a full copy of the article under the Newspaper and Magazine Articles tab. 

"Perhaps the most intriguing evidence is a 16-mm color movie made in 1967 by Roger Patterson, a 34-year-old Yakima, Washington rancher. Long interested in Sasquatch-Bigfoot, Patterson had become convinced that the only w, ay to prove its existence was to get clear photographs. In October 1967, he heard of fresh tracks along Bluff Creek in northern California. Patterson and Bob Gimlin, an experienced animal tracker, set out to investigate.

They scouted the area on horseback for a week and a half. Early in the afternoon of October 20, they came to a bend in the creek where a gigantic stump, overturned by a flood, obscured the view ahead. Patterson's horse stopped and snorted, then reared and fell on its side. Moments later, Patterson saw what had startled his mount. "This creature was on my left, about ~ 95 feet across the creek," he recalls. "Its head was very human, though considerably more slanted, and with a large forehead and wide nostrils. Its arms hung almost to its knees when it walked. Its hair was two to four inches long, brown underneath, lighter at the top, and covering the entire body except for the face. And it was a female; it had big, pendulous breasts."

Patterson reached into his saddlebag and grabbed his movie camera. The creature, meanwhile, was walking across a sandbar toward the hillside. Patterson began trotting after it, shooting pictures. At one point, the creature turned and stared curiously at the camera. Then it went into the woods and out of sight. Gimlin began to give chase, but Patterson, who had used up all his film, told him to stop. "I didn't want to be there alone, without a weapon," he says."

Polygraph examinations do not prove that someone is lying or telling the truth; this is why they are inadmissible as evidence.  If done incorrectly, they can put innocent people through hell - a faulty polygraph examination in Germany convinced investigators that a soldier and his wife were responsible for the death of their six-year old daughter; only after much time and effort was it revealed that a faulty question had caused ambiguous results.  (During polygraphs, each admitted feeling responsible for their daughter's death because neither had checked to make sure that doors were locked before they went to bed.)  

If done correctly, they can provide leads for investigators.  This polygraph examination was likely done correctly and designed to identify indicia of lying.  National Wildlife did not want to stake its reputation on a bogus film shot by a con man, so the polygrapher probably did not include softball questions.  In essence, National Wildlife magazine and the polygrapher they hired were hostile parties vis-a-vis Roger Patterson.
