Unique Sighting Report - Ability Of Bf To Hide In Plain Sight

If you haven't visited the Media forum lately, you may have missed the excellent six part series of articles being published in the Yakima Herald.

The fifth article - True Believers: People of all types are certain they have encountered Sasquatch - has a very interesting sighting report of a man recollecting watching a BF for a long period of time in his rifle scope:

"GIANT IN THE CROSSHAIRS: Kevin Jones was only 16, in his third year of hunting in the Blue Mountains with his father, when he espied something through the scope of his high-powered rifle.

But it’s with his 28-year background of adherence to strict military schedules that Jones, now 59 and a former Army colonel living in Benton City, speaks assuredly about how long he observed a hairy, two-legged, creature across a draw in what is now the Wenaha-Tucannon Wilderness.

“Approximately 45 minutes,†Jones said. “At about 250 yards through a 9-power scope. He filled about half the scope; it was like looking at him from 40 to 50 yards.â€

Jones described it as “something man-like but hairy, standing up and moving real slow through what we call snowbrush or buckbrush … it would pull the limbs down hand over hand, holding (the limbs) with the left hand and picking the leaves off the tips with the right and eating the leaves.â€

Jones had been waiting as his father moved the elk from the other side of Buck Ridge up over the saddle. When the elk reached the top of the draw, they were briefly startled — perhaps seeing or smelling the creature, Jones said, but then “just relaxed and continued on like he was nothing.â€

When the elk passed within 15 feet of the creature, Jones had both within his rifle scope. “And he just dwarfed the elk,†said Jones, who said he was so focused on and fascinated by the creature that “I can’t tell you to this day if any of those elk had antlers on them.â€

After the elk passed, the creature squatted when it became alerted to two hunters coming over the saddle. “It just turned away, without moving its feet … pivoted his upper body and curled forward and just looked like a stump sitting there.â€

The hunters became alerted as they got to within 15 feet of the creature, Jones said, as if they “smelled something or saw something. I swear to God they looked right at him. And then all of a sudden they just totally relaxed — like a kid playing with a boy loses interest and drops the toy.â€

After the hunters walked on, the creature took off in the opposite direction, “and covered the ground faster than I could run, without ever breaking into a run. It looked like it was walking in water … the arm swing like it was using the hand as a paddle, the palms facing to the rear like they were big paddles, pulling it through the water as it walked.â€

Asked why he didn’t shoot it, Jones said it appeared so much like a human — albeit an eight-foot-tall, hairy one — he “felt guilty†even looking at it through a rifle scope."

While I've read a number of sighting reports that talk about seeing what appears to be a rock or a stump in an open field or next to a road suddenly rise up and walk off on two legs, this is the first time I've read an account that described how the BF forms the position to "become" a rock or a stump. It is very interesting that the two hunters looked right at it from a distance of 15 feet and apparently didn't recognize it, and also interesting that they were apparently alerted but then relaxed just like the elk did that came by moments earlier.

This thread is dedicated to discussion of the ability of BF to "hide in plain sight".

That's an awesome report. I had no idea they eat leaves lol. Interesting how he said it could walk faster than he could run. I believe it's possible though.

Once the BFRO database is back online, do a google search "BFRO eating leaves" or something like that. There are scores of sighting reports of them eating leaves. I think leaves must represent a major part of their diet and for aficionados of foraging, leaves are an excellent food source for humans as well (with correct knowledge of what is edible and what is poisonous). This is an often overlooked part of the edible forest.

One other aspect of this sighting report I found interesting is that the BF took no interest in the elk that came within range of a possible kill, and the elk also didn't run away in fear of the BF. It may be simply that the elk sensed the BF wasn't in "hunting mode" at that time.

I have interviewed a number of witnesses whom stated. "If I had not looked right at it I would not have known it was there". The Sasquatch seems to have the ability to stand motionless, blending into the shadows so well that often nothing is seen until it moves.

Tom Brown says the best way to hunt is to kinda unfocus your eyes and try to spot movement. I guess the human eye evolved to use motion as a means to lock in on prey. So if the Squatch doesn't move the coloring of the hair would blend it in good with it's suroundings and the human eye would have a hard time spotting it. Also I think the length of the hair might help break up its human-like form like a gilly suit, so the eye would not detect a human figure which is something the brain looks for.

One has to train their eyes to search. Up down; left to right, down, up; right to left. Even do a figure eight pattern and reverse it. Don't focus on one spot with center sight, look from the corner of the eyes also. Least this is what I was told.

Doesn't surprise me in the least. Great to read a report that shows their true abilities. You can walk right past one within several feet and not even know it's there.

This is where, I believe some of the "blobsquatch" videos take on a new area of interest. It also makes you wonder about the sighting by a member here of two Sasquatches perhaps attempting that very maneuver on the road. I have seen several video's by many of the you tube research people, that seem to depict the " if I don't move, they can't see me" technique. Many animals use this to evade us, Sasquatch seems to do it better. Some people feel that the behavior modification goes into the realm of impossibility, however, they could be giving off an infra sound or pheromone type reaction to induce changes in behavior, such as calm, terror, or confusion. There are examples of behavior control in other species, for example, there is a type of spider that uses control to make its victim cooperatively walk calmly to its fate.

Sometimes thinking a little out side of the box is ok, particularly when we see examples of the same type of behavior, and influence in other aspects of nature. We forget sometimes we are also animals of this earth, and subject to our own base vulnerabilities, despite our gadgets and "advanced" thinking.

Just some thoughts to help the discussion.

Regarding this species and our lack of progression at documenting it as a known species, we SHOULD be thinking outside the box. Conventional methods obviously don't work.

Many researchers I've talked to have arrived at the point, based on personal eyewitness experiences or preponderance of evidence, that BF does exist. They've stopped questioning whether they exist and are concentrating on how they exist, survive, thrive, and hide. To me that is a much more interesting set of questions.

I agree toejam, obviously some new methods of approach are in order, as some of the less recognized researchers do, and are getting some very interesting results. As for the often brought up subject of roadkill, etc, ( how about reckless senility? That is one the skeptics overlook), that could be explained by a better understanding of their family structure, and support. If they are as intelligent as they seem, and possess the senses they seem to,then the avoidance of traffic and any type of activity in their domain, whether it be soldiers, or forestry workers,or whatever, would be very simple for them. If they really do live in tight family groups, then that could explain a lot when it comes to bodies, senile wanderers, etc.

Don't forget, there are societies out there that are very very different from us, and we tend to extend our own values when considering something, but when was the last time you chewed your grandmothers food for her because she has lost her teeth?

Some people do......

BFS,

I get the notion of this thread and whole-hearted agree with it: If you perceive something to be part of the landscape say a stump (at relative distance), it will look like a stump if it fits your preconceived notion of what a stump should look like. Not attempting to derail this thread, but there’s a huge problem with this guys story. He claims to have sighted the bigfoot @ 250 yards and observed it for 45 minutes. He claims that it filled half the field of view of the scope. Even if he had the glass cranked all the way to 9, his bigfoot would need to be a minimum of about 25 feet tall and 10 feet wide for his description of how big it appeared through the glass to be remotely accurate. Just to be as half as tall as the field of view at 9 power at that range, his ninja squatch is going to need to be around 14-17 feet tall. Yet he estimates it to be 8 feet tall? Those numbers simply do not compute. In this case it wasn’t like those estimates were made in haste on a fleeting encounter. He’s claiming 45 minutes.

I’ll buy someone realistically describing an 8 foot tall bigfoot as “dwarfing†an elk, even an adult Roosevelt. But something that is 8’ tall or even 10’ tall is simply not remotely going to fill anything but a small percentage of the FOV @ 9X and 250 yards. His own words are self-contradictory.

I can’t buy this Colonel’s story as anything but pure bunk and I really don’t think this account adds credibility of bigfoot’s reputed ninja-like ability to “hide in plain sight†at distances as short as 15 feet.

More than once, I've walked right past my husband, "closer than 15 feet", in the woods while he was dressed in cammo.

I believe what's written in the report is within reason as to how they cammo themselves, not just for staying out of view but also used in hunting prey.
