JKH 157
Batteries lasting only 6 hours, dang. My Sony PX333 gets 3+ days on AAAs. It's on Amazon for about $200, think I bought mine for about $60. Previously purchased Sony PCMm10 (recommended) for just over $200, now selling used for $900. Edit to add, I see that one was discontinued. Wonder if I could get mine repaired. I've seen the Zooms suggested, but have not tried them. I recommend dropping them in likely areas, not carrying around, humans make too much noise. Edited June 23, 2020 by JKH
cmknight 44
The Zoom H4n was designed for recording music, at up to CD quality audio levels. It wasn't designed with long-term recording in mind.

That level of sound quality to hopefully pick up some of the stuff that we have heard but was not picked up on our cameras. Almost went with the omnidirectional model, but this one seems to be more rugged. Regardless of how anyone feels about Cliff Barackman, he has some great information on his sight about sound recorders. https://cliffbarackman.com/cliffs-recommendations/audio-recording/
JKH 157
Ah, I see. There are lots of good choices. I think I must have read Cliff's article in my initial search for the right tech, also Stan's info was helpful to me, although a bit older now. http://stancourtney.com/field-recorders/ Since I've been recommending Sonys, I looked up their current portable products. https://pro.sony/ue_US/products/portable-digital-recorders Edited June 24, 2020 by JKH
JKH 157
Sony's repair service advised trying a local electronics repair, but the couple that I called were pretty much "sorry, no". I liked that recorder so much that I bought another used. Here's a clip from the August trip I posted about, it's some kind of distant vocals, near salt water. Need headphones and max volume. 200827_001vocal.wav
