Thanks - I was not familiar w/that particular story.  Multiple witnesses + a daylight encounter = pretty good encounter.

Yeah, this whole section sort of lost me ... not sure what the writer was attempting to accomplish.

Indeed. In addition to the motel manager, and then again with the Portland businessmen, others in The Dalles had encounters over a few weeks period of time. It was quite a string of events.
