Pretty expensive stuff, NorthWind.

Yeah. I know.

But so are eDNA kits! And I could use THIS stuff over and over.   :D

If I survived.

I had the thought maybe they could be tricked into thinking a campsite is unattended.  3 people hike in, set up camp and do campy things for a couple of hours.  Then someone has an "injury" like maybe a twisted ankle. Construct a stretcher and carry the "injured" person out.  (but that person would only be a dummy head and blankets) and the real person stays quiet and hidden in the tent.  Would they follow the "rescuers" or check out the camp?  Maybe both....

In my book, The Sasquatch Hunter's Field Manual ,  I wrote about something similar that idea :):

"...Some even hold to the belief that the creature can count. It really doesn't matter if it can or can't. It may understand that there's three hogs in the clearing and not two but knowing that doesn't mean it can count. It's really more about assessing attack strategies than anything close to rudimentary math. If there are enough members in the team a trap of sorts can be set up. Rig up ahead of time a couple of cameras outside a target tent and hook them to USB ports of two computers inside the tent. The ploy goes like this: For a six man team start by having two members enter a tent. One comes out and two go in which means three are now in the tent. One comes out which leaves two in the tent. Then three go in and two come out. Then one comes out which will again leave two in the tent. This can be done alongside various diversions by outside members away from the tent to distract any observers.

The members outside busy themselves with packing and going into various tents and returning and then walking behind tents and then reappearing. In the confusion the two that were left in the tent will turn on the computer in order to monitor the outside but otherwise should go unnoticed. Assemble the team and go noisily into the field to draw attention away from the camp. The trap has now been set.

The two left in the tent are armed and can now monitor at least two approaches to camp on the computer screens..."

The important things are to be interesting and don't not to appear sneaky, aggressive, or afraid ... in other words, appear safe to approach.

A solo adventure means that you are out numbered. You have to be out numbered. Herds of people are questionable. ( In Montana, anything more than 3 is a 'herd' ).

I have not seen any posts about other animals in research areas relating to giving up your location. Animals watch and listen to other animals. Birds see you, regardless of camo / no camo and start squawking. I like ravens. I pack treats for ravens. They are smarter than apes, are capable of abstract thinking and have been held as 'tricksters' before we started recorded history. They always inform other animals of my locations. Ravens can work 2 ways in the way of leading an apex predator to your location or warning you of an approaching apex predator / danger. Either way, they have dibs on your eyeballs. Never try to fool a raven.

Be normal, be safe and no tricks.

One technique sure to let you know they are around because you hear movement, is to openly urinate where they can see you.    Two different times I managed to do that and twice got a chest slapping response like a gorilla bluff charge.  I am guessing that males think you are claiming their territory.

Love it. It would be very entertaining to pee excessively in their territory while they look on helplessly. They are too cowardly to do anything about it except whoop and act tough. I'd like to get under their skin any way possible while they remain at a distance wary of my machete.

If they zap i got an answer for that too!

The first time the response was frightening but pretty benighn    The chest slapping tantrum in the woodline out of my sight.     The second time started like that,  but right after it happened it started raining and I wanted to get back to my truck which was about a mile away.   It did not follow me on the trail, but  cut through the woods and showed up nearly when I did at my truck.    I was putting my gear away in the truck and decided to set the recorder on the dashboard for a while where it was out of the rain.   I heard a thudding commotion and heard a huffing bluff charge towards the truck.   Again I did not see it but managed to record it.     Of course the skeptics here,   ascribed that to a ruffled grouse flying right at me.    I have experienced grouse encounters several times and could really tell the difference in frequency variation of the beats.  A grouse thumping starts very slowly and gradually increases.   This was fast at onset.   Why a grouse would fly directly at me standing next to my truck is also strange.   Nothing I was doing would have spooked it and caused it to fly and if it did fly, it would not have flown directly at me.      Anyway I was there and it was different than a grouse.    It scared me enough that I would not go back there alone.

Don't think I ever heard the grouse part of that story. Would love to give it a listen if the clip is still around.

Having jumped two grouse in the last week and a half, I'm interested!

@ SWWASAS  -  It must disconcerting to have a sasquatch shadow you knowing it has you in its sights.  That makes the walk back to your vehicle seem like forever.  I've had things happen around camp at night many miles from the car knowing you're there for the night. Time to hunker down. I wouldn't welcome the hike back, day or night, knowing something is paralleling me and could take me any time it wants to.

@Arvedis  -  Can you share what you'd do if zapped?

I can only imagine the zapping as a mental and physical drain. So I would try to flush my system, water, all kinds of leafy veggies and antioxidants and just keep flushing and if possible, exercise, sweat and keep moving so the body works. Caffeine works really well for that if you can handle the doses.

I was going to say I have a perfectly fitted tin foil hat but that joke now falls flat. I don't want to make light of zapping since it's for real. It has affected people. I suspect the species to have a natural command of some directional energy that our mind and body is not prepared to confront. It's some kind of natural deterrent. Infrasound or whatever is going to mess with the human equilibrium.

The only tactic that seems to work is asking them not to do it. Sounds crazy but in all cases where people have done so, this has worked. Especially in their element when they know they have you vulnerable. I don't think they are mind readers but they are picking up on our emotions. Maybe not understanding the language but they seem to understand the energy in our words (and thoughts).

I know it sounds brave to say from an office chair but I would like to be able to experiment with various ways of getting a reaction from them. Challenge their huffing and puffing and see the level of retaliation they really bring.  Those noises they make are unearthly. What else are they going to do about a person in their territory? Howl, growl, throw things, rock your camper, get spooky with invisible activity, mindspeak, be a nuisance any way they can, and zapping. But what if none of that worked? What if a test subject could handle all of their tantrum and stay there and antagonize them?

For sure, their stink attacks can clear out the forest. Need a way to deal with that.

I dont know if this the same as being zapped, but for me it was more of a pickly/tingly thing but it also caused two cameras to fail, one permanently.

I did exactly that.   Asked it to quit when I was zapped.    At that point it had hit me three times.   I told it that it was impressive but it was hurting me and to stop.    It did.    I felt a strong buzzing and pain in my gut.   I wonder if they are capable of rupturing spleens.  My gut hurt the rest of the day.  The fear induced was palpable and did not subside until I had left the area.    I got about a half mile away and thought what in the world did I just do?   I was close to a BF and walked away from it.    I turned around and went back but it was apparently gone.

Serious stuff. Maybe everyone's body and mind reacts with varying degrees of intensity to whatever force that is causing the neurological and other serious physical symptoms.

I've been zapped and it manifested in pure panic, just a flutterly, icky feeling in my chest and stomach. Almost made me vomit. Definitely made me edgy and nervous - I actually slammed the door shut on my van and groveled on the floor crying for several minutes. Then it turned off like a light switch, and I returned to doing what I was doing previous to the attack. I think it's just infrasound. If it ever happens again, I'll be happy because I will know at least one of them is around. The game is on, then! And if it is intolerable, I'll politely ask them to stop.
