What does this nature discovery mean? Here are my completely uninformed thoughts: First, I applaud the logic. I will admit when we see something unusual, I am more prone to think it is in fact not unusual. It is just not as well understood. Well, maybe just not well understood by me. Once we understand it the real reason turns out to be pretty boring. I would like to offer 2 examples: 1- Plaster cast "fingerprints". I heard on TV shows how these plaster footprints of Bigfoot had dermal ridges. There was even claimed evidence of healed skin in the footprint's dermal ridge lines which "couldn't be faked". Jimmy Chilcutte became a household name in the Bigfoot world as the FBI fingerprint expert who pointed these things out. He concluded this could only be explained by an undiscovered primate making the prints. This may be the case, but his analysis was flawed it seems. The effect he noticed was able to be explained and reproduced by others giving the same ridges as an experimental result. This meant there could be other explanations for the same lines he based his conclusions on. 2- The Skookum casts were thought to be a bigfoot siting in the mud. It seems its more likely this was just a deer/elk type animal. Of the two which is more likely. We attribute things to unusual findings which can be significant. Sometimes it is and sometimes it's not. In the end we need to go wherever the facts take us. Are the findings explained by some other natural process or typical process?

For those who doubt the usefulness of DNA in identifying Bigfoot as a new species or a Homo sapiens hybrid, please read this paper on the Likweli monkey, which has extensive DNA results to demonstrate its place in monkey phylogeny as a distinct species. A similar paper on the Lesula monkey, another recent discovery, can be found in PLOS ONE.

That is usually what happens. People have their own sighting and want to learn more about the elusive creatures. That is what happened to me.

For those following the upcoming Capturing Bigfoot documentary, the name Norm Johnson is certainly front and center since he possessed the film reel that's at the heart of it all. What's perhaps less known is that Norm's brother Dave Johnson could play a huge role in this new footage, namely being in the suit that we are going to eventually see. To recap posting events on BFF from 15 years ago, a person referenced by Greg Long in his MOB book as the 'Chinook pressman' turns out to be none other than Dave Johnson. It's known he was a bigfoot hoaxer during that time based on Marq Evans interview on the Den of Geek podcast. So considering his brother had the camera original, and Dave was a hoaxer, its not surprising the obvious conclusion would be Norm filmed Dave in a mimicry of the PGF and this has nothing directly to do with Roger. Since Marq mentioned that, people have been trying to get info on Dave, who appears to be still alive (based on a single posting on a FB group). He's be mid 80's at least by now, similar to Bob H. Todd Prescott at Sasquatch Archives has said that a few people have tried to get info on Dave but have come up empty. So I was wondering if being local might have some benefits? Is he a 'known' character in this Yakima saga, like Bob H and others? It appears he and Norm kept a very low profile (never appearing by name in MOB or elsewhere, even here on BFF) so they've been successful staying out of the spotlight. Are any reporters at the Yakima herald republic still interested in the PGF, would they use their resources to try and track him down? Theresa Brooks (discoverer of the reel) has not responded to any emails about the topic, and Dave certainly hasn't made any efforts to confirm or deny anything. I suspect (and hope) he has been waiting 60 years for this film to be shown, so he's going to stay quiet till October at least.

Normally, I would have added this to the queue for later publication, which currently extends out to June of 2027. However, this article published in The Tacoma News Tribune of Tacoma (WA) on November 7, 1971, seems too important to delay. Skeptics and scofftics like to hold up Ray Wallace as an "honest" man who should be believed as to his claims of faking every track in the Pacific northwest. His full throated claims that Bigfoot exist and that he has evidence of them appear to be transparent lies; his later claims about being the brains behind the Bigfoot hoax appear to be equally transparent but just lies in a different direction.

^^^ This is a point Anna Nikaris has made about Bigfoot. She discovered some similar primate in Asia herself a few years ago. Never know what is out there.

Thanks everyone. Good input. This all gives me some things to think about. If nothing else, I would bet Bigfoot could greatly outpace the best human wilderness explorer be they Bear Grylls, Survivor man, or Grisly Adams. So long as they can outpace a person, they are people safe from unwelcomed interaction with people.

I walked 33 miles in 9 hours on a paved highway one night at age 21. I walked 5 miles on a muddy trail and across Coal Creek in a couple hours in the dark several years ago in my mid-60's. I didn't run or even trot either time. I just walked without stopping. But I didn't do it day after day, either. I have done multiple 20-50 mile hikes through the wilderness, though. Just watched that Geronimo did 95 miles in 24 hours at 55 years old.

My totally uneducated guess. Back during the "War", troops routinely marched 10-15 miles in a day in decent weather. And they were carrying a fair amount of baggage. Stonewall's boys could do 15-20 if they needed to, maybe a little more. Taking a guess that BF could easily do three times the speed of a man without breaking a sweat (based on eyewitness accounts), maybe 30-40 miles/day on cruise control, and perhaps somewhere around 50-60 if they decided to push it. But my guess would be that they would only go as far as they thought they needed to. They would need to find "refueling" areas along the way. Plus it might also matter which side of the fire they were on. Was the fire between them and known areas or could they make to places they had been before so they knew the routes to take? Definitely a lot of variables in play in this scenario.

Good questions. How far does (the usual) Bigfoot travel in a day? A long time ago I looked up a bunch of biology information for comparison. Orangutans have a average home territory of 6 - 12 square miles; presumably they don't go any further than they have to in a given day. Black bears average 15 - 60 square miles for their home territory. Some website said that grizzlies had home territories of 50-300 square miles for females and up to 1,500 square miles for males. So it would seem that the expected maximum range any animal travels in a given day would be "not much more than that needed to meet it's basic needs." So a grazing deer may walk 2-3 miles in a day, but go around in a circuit grazing and a larger carnivore/omnivore would go a good bit further because it needs more calories. Maybe 8 miles per day, but never going further than 4-5 miles from its starting point. How far can a Bigfoot on a mission go in a single day? Probably impossible to guess. Is it following a fairly passable game (or human) trail or is it bushwhacking cross-country? Does the route it take have a lot of elevation gain and are there resources (food, water) along the way? Finally, what is driving the movement? Staying ahead of a fire and not burning to death is a pretty good motivator, but there are still limits on animals' and humans' endurance and stamina, particularly if factoring in stress, dehydration, hunger, etc, as MIB noted. I read somewhere that wagon trains only made an average of 20 miles/day crossing flat prairies. That seems to be to be a good maximum distance for a two-legged primate traveling in rugged terrain, but I certainly wouldn't argue very strenuously against someone who thought that 100 miles/day was possible. Bigfoot n' Beyond recently re-released an interview with Sara, who was camping in the Marble Mountains and heard a Bigfoot traveling for quite some distance. It's Episode 374. If I recall correctly, she also believed that whatever she was hearing was covering a lot of rough terrain very, very quickly.
