1967/10/26 - Book - Philip Morris Sees His Costume in TV News Report
Trogluddite posted a topic in Patterson-Gimlin Film Reference Materials
As noted in the background entries on Philip Morris and the Morris Costume Company (or the Morris Magic Company in 1967), Phil Long's otherwise execrable book The Making of Bigfoot does provide a useful service by locking in Philip Morris's claims about seeing his costume on a TV news report in October 1967. Rather than enrich Long any further by buying his book, which demonstrates only that he failed his classes on investigative journalism, those who don't have the book should get it from their local library. On page 448, Philip Morris states "... Anyway, a couple of months later, October '67, I was watching TV, and this film is being shown and I see my gorilla suit...." On page 464, Morris confirms that he saw the P-G film on TV at his home "at Kistler Avenue" in Charlotte, North Carolina. According to Todd Prescott's video, Patterson-Gimlin Film—first showings at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9I4pnLFhrqg&list=LL, the first showing of any extract of the P-G film on television was on a local Yakima TV station, KIMA. While the date that this news show aired is unclear, it appears highly unlikely given the technology of the day that any east coast television show ran the P-G film which Morris claimed that he saw. -
As noted in the background entries on Philip Morris and the Morris Costume Company (or the Morris Magic Company in 1967), Phil Long's otherwise execrable book The Making of Bigfoot does provide a useful service by locking in Philip Morris's claims about selling Roger Patterson a gorilla (not Bigfoot) suit. Rather than enrich Long any further by buying his book, which demonstrates only that he failed his classes on investigative journalism, those who don't have the book should get it from their local library. On page 446, Morris begins recounting the phone call he supposedly received from a man who identified himself as Roger Patterson, a rodeo cowboy. While describing the back and forth between himself and Patterson, Morris surmises (in other words, guesses) that Patterson found his company's advertisement in a weekly magazine called Amusement Business. See p. 448. Amusement Business was published weekly; the issues published on August 12 and August 26, 1967, were Volume 79, Issues 31 and 33 respectively. Thus, the earliest issue which Roger Patterson could have seen this advertisement based on Philip Morris and Greg Long's speculation was the August 5, 1967 issue. Philip Morris provided Greg Long with a photograph of "the exact same type of gorilla suit Roger Patterson Roger Patterson bought ... in or about August 1967." These are the words of either Greg Long or Philip Morris. Here is that photograph from Greg Long's book, included in this post for the limited purpose of reporting and commenting on, and critically evaluating, Philip Morris’s claim. Forums member Apeman found an article which gave credit for the ape suit in a 1967 movie called The Perils of Pauline to the Morris Costume Company. There does appear to be a similarity, although IMDb identifies Marcel Delgado as the creator of that suit.

Both videos were interesting and it's too bad that others can't play them. It's hard to imagine an ape that is 12 feet high that can get enough protein by eating ants that infested a stick as shown on the film. Maybe there is enough protein or special minerals required to remain healthy. Gigantopthecus was probably a plant eater unlike some of Africa's primates. I wonder if it deevolved and became smaller over time and transformed into the present day African gorilla as this film depicted.

Jeremy writes ""My first encounter happened along a creek in south-central Kentucky. I wasn't a typical teenager. I didn't spend much time running around with friends. My passion was hunting, tracking, and being outdoors. After reading The Tracker by Tom Brown Jr., I was completely hooked on wilderness skills and wildlife. When I was around 13 years old, I often went down to the creek at night with a lantern and fished for catfish. I loved the solitude. It was peaceful, and every now and then I'd hook into a freshwater drum or a snapping turtle that would really test my gear. One night, I had been fishing for three or four hours. About 100 yards to my southwest was a road cut into the side of a mountain. To stabilize the hillside, large riprap rocks had been placed beneath the road. I've always had excellent hearing, and even at 13 I could identify just about every animal in those woods by sound alone. That night, something strange happened. As I sat there in the darkness with my lantern turned low, I heard something running barefoot along the road. Then I heard it grab the guardrail and vault over it. A moment later, rocks shifted and slid as it landed in the riprap below. Then the woods went silent. I could hear faint footsteps moving through the forest. Because I was down by the creek and the bank rose about ten feet above me, my lantern light probably wasn't visible from where the sounds were coming from. I kept fishing, convincing myself it was probably a deer crossing the road and that my imagination was filling in the blanks. Then things escalated. At first, small rocks started landing in the creek. Then larger ones some sounded as big as basketballs when they hit the water. I tried to ignore it and kept fishing, thinking maybe fish were jumping or something natural was causing the disturbance. About twenty minutes later, I caught a catfish. I turned up my lantern while I unhooked it, and that's when I noticed a pair of glowing eyes on the opposite bank. They were fixed directly on me. After I released the fish, the eyes remained motionless. Then, in one smooth movement, whatever it was turned its head and disappeared. For the next fifteen minutes, I heard vocalizations. They didn't sound aggressive. If anything, they seemed communicative almost as if the animal was trying to locate others or perhaps encourage me to leave the area. The closest comparison I can make is the sound of a barn owl. Oddly enough, I never felt threatened. Before leaving, I caught a decent-sized bluegill and placed it on the bank as an offering, just in case we ever crossed paths again. My second encounter occurred when I was 16. I've been bowhunting my entire life. I'm 47 now, and I still love it just as much as I did back then. This encounter took place in southeastern Kentucky in the vast wilderness of the Big South Fork region. The area is home to black bears, elk nowadays, and plenty of whitetail deer the reason I was there. I had hiked in along a muddy access trail maintained by Fish and Wildlife. The trail led to a place known as "The Helipad." I've always assumed the open field at the end of the road was used for helicopter rescues from the nearby ravines. Around the five-mile mark, the road split. My dad headed toward the fields near the helipad while I took the left fork to hunt deeper in the woods. It was early October. Some leaves had already fallen, giving excellent visibility from a tree stand. Once I climbed, I could see nearly 200 yards through the timber toward the fields below. I settled into a tree around 2:30 that afternoon. It was a popular climbing tree straight, sturdy, and easy to ascend quietly. At approximately 3:30, I noticed movement far down the ridge. At first, I couldn't make out what I was seeing. As it moved closer, I realized it was traveling in a way I'd only ever seen bobcats move. It would leap from the base of one tree to the next, minimizing noise with every step. I'd watched bobcats do this before while stalking. The difference was that this animal was upright. It stood roughly five to six feet tall and moved effortlessly. Its arms were unusually long, and whenever possible it traveled along fallen logs instead of the forest floor. Through my binoculars, I could see that it was black with reddish tips on the ends of its hair. It appeared young. Its coat looked clean, healthy, and almost glossy in the sunlight. There was a gracefulness to it a combination of strength and agility that's hard to describe. It would leap what looked like eight to ten feet at a time, landing at the base of a tree and grabbing the trunk with one hand. Despite its size, it made almost no sound. I watched it approach until it was about 75 yards away. Then it noticed me. To this day, I don't know how. Maybe it saw me. Maybe it sensed me. It immediately jumped behind a tree and began peeking around the far side, studying me as much as I was studying it. For what felt like an hour but was probably only fifteen minutes we observed one another. Finally, it turned and quietly retreated the way it had come, moving through the woods with the same incredible stealth. The moment it disappeared from sight, I climbed down and left the area as quickly as possible. My reasoning was simple: if there were juveniles in the area, there were probably adults as well. I hold a degree in biology with a specialization in fish and wildlife habitat, and I have spent a lifetime in the outdoors. Whatever I witnessed that day remains one of the most unusual experiences of my life. If anyone has studied similar reports or encountered anything comparable, I would be very interested in discussing what I saw." Listen to the Podcast

1967 - Background - The Morris Costume Company
Trogluddite posted a topic in Patterson-Gimlin Film Reference Materials
In Greg Long's The Making of Bigfoot at pages 444-448, Philip Morris describes the history of his costume company. According to him, the company began because there were no inexpensive gorilla suits that magic acts, theater groups, and other entertainers could afford, so he decided to fill the void. Greg Long's book states that in the 1960s, Morris was selling the gorilla suits from the basement of his house in Charlotte, North Carolina. Morris advertised his gorilla suits in Amusement Business magazine and speculated that because the magazine carried about rodeo shows and personalities, Roger Patterson saw an advertisement for his gorilla suits in "an August 1967 issue" of the magazine. Morris goes on to say that he first received a phone call from Roger Patterson inquiring about a Morris gorilla suit around August 1967. Morris states that he was selling gorilla suits "back then" (i.e., in 1967) for $335 but later raised their price $435. However, a copy of the advertisement from the December 1967 issue of Amusement Business (provided by Morris to Long) shows that Morris's gorilla suits had been priced at $750 and were reduced in December to $435.1 The Morris Costume Company did not receive much, if any, attention in the press until 1980. The earliest significant article was published in The Daily Inter Lake of Kalispell, Montana, on August 13, 1980. Seems like making the best Bigfoot costume ever would have been worth mentioning. The company was also mentioned in the Daily American Republic of Poplar Bluff, Missouri on November 10, 1980. Seems like making the best Bigfoot costume ever would have been worth mentioning. The November 4, 1982 article in The Daily Star of Hammond, Louisiana included a picture of Philip Morris with some of his finest creations. Seems like a replica of the best Bigfoot costume ever would have been included in this group. 1 I've located a museum that claims to have archives of Amusement Business magazine and requested copies of certain things from two August 1967 issues. -

In the past I've received a warning point for a comment that was much milder but was perceived as political commentary, which is restricted to the Tar Pit. However, I primarily respond to note that it may not be a YouTube video creator limiting viewing to the US, but it may be other countries restricting access. Without offering any commentary on the wisdom or need for doing so, I understand that both Canada and the European Union now have stringent requirements to prevent "fake news." Since these types of things are usually performed by computer algorithms, there are often many unintended limitations in what can or cannot be seen in such places. Don't have any idea what's actually preventing someone from viewing this clip. Usually, when I have a problem its because the computers are actively conspiring to make themselves as annoying as possible to me.

1967 - Background - Magician and Costume Maker Philip Morris (RIP)
Trogluddite posted a topic in Patterson-Gimlin Film Reference Materials
Greg Long's book The Making of Bigfoot contains a useful chapter on Philip Morris, 1935 - 2017, who claimed to have made the "the Bigfoot suit for a famous film" according to AI. This chapter is useful because it locks in Philip Morris's story about how he sold the gorilla suit used in the P-G film to Roger Patterson.1 More on that later. An abbreviated autobiography of Philip Morris can be found at https://www.circusesandsideshows.com/performers/phillipmorris.html. It should be acknowledged that Philip Morris was apparently a talented and hard-working entertainer. He was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan and was performing publicly as a magician at a young age, as shown in this article from The Kalamazoo Gazette on October 21, 1953. In 1960 Philip Morris started, and starred in, Dr. Evil's Horror Theater - a show like Svengoolie, Elvira Mistress of the Dark, and Chilly Billy Cardille, where hosts showed old horror movies and interjected humor (of a sort). This photo shows Philip Morris (seated) and may or may not include one of his gorilla costumes. By 1967 and 1968, Philip Morris was performing his Wonderful World of Fantasy nationwide, a show which continued into the 1970s. Morris told Greg Long that he began making gorilla costumes in the basement of his house and was selling them to circuses and vaudeville shows which could not afford the high price of a Hollywood gorilla suit (which were usually owned by the actors who played gorillas themself). It is one of these gorilla suits that was allegedly used by Roger Patterson to create Patty. 1 Philip Morris apparently first claimed to have sold Roger Patterson a gorilla costume during a August 16, 2002 interview on WBT-AM, Charlotte, North Carolina radio. He was also interviewed, apparently briefly, on the issue by Ormon Grimsby on September 16, 2009. See http://www.horrorhostgraveyard.com/2009/09/ormon-grimsby-interviews-dr-evil.html. This interview was identified by Forums member Apeman; however the link to the actual interview (http://mcftv.com/) is now dead. -

We're in TN, USA. Although, with all the bs in 'the states' these days, Canada often seems like it would be better. I don't know why anyone would restrict a youtube video to the US only, but apparently that does happen. New Film Shown at South by South West "Capturing Bigfoot"
Incorrigible1 replied to Skinwalker13's topic in General Bigfoot Discussion
Found on a Facebook site, presented as I found it. Presented for your perusal. I don't know its veracity. It does align with some of my thoughts: Here's what BFRO's founder, Matt Moneymaker said about the new Patterson Gimlin film documentary: BFRO (Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization) - est. 1995 Matthew John Moneymaker · There is a film festival entry at South by Southwest (Austin TX) called “Capturing Bigfoot”. I can save you the time and frustration from watching this clickbait crock. I was going to ignore this story, but the clickbait potency of the keyword “Bigfoot” has helped the story get into the Hollywood Reporter newspaper (very influential), so I am forced to comment on something that I would prefer to not even dignify. It was known at the time, and since that time in the late 1960's, that real life cowboy Roger Patterson was trying to make a documentary about the Bigfoot/Sasquatch mystery when he and Bob Gimlin obtained their famous footage in 1967. He shot a lot of footage, but mostly B-roll. They were from Washington State. The famous 1967 footage was shot in northern California. Most of the other stock footage was shot in Washington State, where this old reel was found. As with EVERY OTHER big documentary and TV series about the Bigfoot subject, Roger wanted to dramatize a few bigfoot encounters, which required using a man in cheap costume. ALL big documentaries and TV series on the Bigfoot subject (until CGI & AI) have had a Bigfoot costume on hand for various re-creation shots — shots which are not presented as actual footage of the creature. It was a necessary part of the visual storytelling for the Bigfoot subject. Patterson’s wife Patricia recalls the use of a cheap costume for this purpose, though she only saw it one time when it was not being worn. The "long lost reel" that is being touted by these sleazy producers at South by Southwest is just story recreation footage using this hokey dramatization costume which bigfoot researchers have known about for years. The lost reel from Washington shows an obvious human is an obvious cheap ape costume. It looks nothing like the actual creature they got on camera in California. Because of that stark difference these sleazy producers are trying to spin this cheap costume for dramatizations as a "trial run" for the eventual 1967 costume. The simple fact that no one has ever been able to duplicate the 1967 “costume”, with all its anatomical peculiarites and massive musculature, has shown sensible people for more than 50 years that it is not a costume. There have been several well-funded and well-staffed attempts to similate what you see in the footage. All of those efforts failed. National Geographic at one time touted the bogus Hieronymous costume story (he claims he was the man in the costume), then years later aired an episode of a different series where the footage was examined with the most modern techniques and computer enhancement and measurement analysis. That subsequent Nat Geo program revealed a foot anatomy on the Patterson creature that is impossible to fake with a man in a costume, so it was determined that the Patterson creature could NOT have been a man in a costume. This recent film festival entry called "Capturing Bigfoot" is just one in long parade of sleazy deceptive productions since the 1990's that have regurgitated and repackaged long-debunked claims because the ploy will still get some cultural traction, riding on the enduring popularity of the bigfoot mystery. It is just a cinematic form of clickbait, as are the news stories about the film, some of which have a subscription paywall in front of the article … for all you Bigfoot diehards who they assume will pay to read about this film … Roger’s son Clint is being paid by the producers of the film. He was flown down to the film festival to give interviews. His mother Patricia knows that the 1967 Patterson film is legitimate and there was no hoax. She has said that very firmly her entire life since that time. Clint waited til his mother was around 100 years old before he took money to sell his deceased father down the river. Clint was very young when the 1967 footage was obtained, and not much older when his father died from cancer. He has no direct knowledge about his father’s accomplishment except what he knows from his estranged mother, and what he has heard from his new pal Bob Hieronymus. Patricia has always said that Roger did not fake the PGF. She would know much better than Clint, though not as well as Roger’s partner Bob Gimlin, who is also still living.
