Thank you for the reply. I’m aware of the footprints, Bill Martin saying they were the wrong size (but who else would they be) etc. I’ve been through old newspaper clippings because you can’t believe anything anyone says on the internet and as close to original source is as good as anyone can get. My interest right now is purely where the “hairy bipedal carrying a red cloth/bag along a ridge” came into the story. It seems that it’s a Paulides fabrication but I want to give his own words a chance before I dismiss him completely

This page mentions footprints that were found as if it was mysterious. One of the Kingsport Times articles published during the search stated that tracks were found of a person with one shoe off and one shoe on. While they don't mention size (or I missed it in skimming the article), they tried to use tracking dogs on that section. Presumably, because they thought that the tracks were from Dennis. Here's the earliest report available, which was almost a month after the disappearance. The second article mentions the car that was nearby, partially hidden off the road. I don't want to say absolutely nothing Bigfoot-related to see here, but I would be at about 93% or greater that this was a tragic accident or unfortunate encounter with a hungry animal.

Any chance anyone with the books could provide a quote of the “hairy man, seen carrying a red thing on his back” part of the book? The books aren’t really available here. Doesn’t seem legit to me but want to see his own words before coming to a firm conclusion. In particular, I’m interested to know, did the info come from Bill Martin, citing Harold Key some 40 years or more after the incident?

I’d have to say that for me a body on a slab is necessary to consider somebody “knowing”. Photos, anecdotal evidence, thermals etc may be enough for belief. But a belief, however strongly held is not “knowing”. Knowing, to me includes a level of certainty that can only come with a body and its examination. If the gov’t or some part of it doesn’t have a body, then I don’t think it reasonable to expect anyone of any authority to stick their neck out further than the scientific community is willing to, and to actually acknowledge a BF. Anything short of a body can be explained with the possibility of misidentification, guy in a suit etc. and could lead to massive embarrassment for the gov’t if shown to be such. Of course, the opportunity to dismiss in that way probably suits the gov’t and its employees fine in the CYA or cover up scenarios you guys mentioned

What's new is old again - after a reported sighting, the hoaxers come out. Published in the Lansing (MI) State Journal on June 18, 1964.

Front page news in Michigan, along with the Senate's vote to end the filibuster of a Civil Rights Bill and the Warren Commission's plan to interview Lee Harvey Oswald's widow. Published in the Detroit (MI) Free Press on June 11, 1964.

The title for this post was an actual headline for an article that I saw, but did not clip. The first story was published in the Kennebec (ME) Journal on May 27, 1976. The second, in the Portland (ME) Evening Express on May 25, 1976. The last story was published on August 19, 1976 in the Modesto (CA) Bee.

Turns out that Tirademan found this one, but because it was buried in a thread in another section, I was unaware of it. This article provides more detail than the one I found.

One more story about this which I just found. Local papers, which I believe were generally partisan at the time, were quick to spin the story to their political advantage, disparaging the Holmes County wild man as a disaffected politician from Wayne County, Ohio.

What do you think of the US Forest Service's view on bigfoot? The forest service and all of it wildlife biologist are staying very tight lipped when it comes to bigfoot that seems to have them stumped and confused. Tom Schultz who is the head of this government organization with 33,000 employees and all they have to say about bigfoot is its a mythical creature. Do they really mean bigfoot is a mythical/paranormal creature that evades capture and scientific study? Read another persons view on bigfoot. This statement gets into the woo factor that many bigfoot researchers have noticed including my own observations. Bigfoot and UFO sightings seem to coincide, like the 1973 sightings in the Pacific Northwest, where people reported seeing strange lights in the sky along with Bigfoot sightings. Another notable case is the 1967 Patterson-Gimlin film, where some theorists suggest UFOs were involved in the background, considering the unusual nature of the event. Government Secrecy: There’s a lot of speculation about the government’s role in keeping certain phenomena under wraps. Some believe that the secrecy could be due to a broader understanding of unexplained phenomena, like interdimensional beings or extraterrestrial visitors, which could include Bigfoot as part of a larger, unrecognized truth about the nature of our world. Electromagnetic Disturbances: Electromagnetic anomalies near Bigfoot sightings are often noted by witnesses, with some pointing to these disturbances as evidence of interdimensional activity. It's great to converse with somebody who gets it! You know how this works. They create flag officers out of post commanders, naval executive officers, chiefs of staff, etc. And those who build relationships told to each other. Some of the people at the very top do know. This extends well beyond sasquatchery and UFOs. A well known example would be Lyle Laverty. He knows.........and talks quietly. He doesn't create a circus atmosphere, clearly keeps it low key, and the only way his name really got out there was from others talking about him. No major conspiracy needed.
