JumboJimJabrony Posted October 19, 2024 Posted October 19, 2024 In the south east as a "woods gun" I'll cary my smith 686. Historically I would cary a glock 23 or a 1911, sometimes still do. I honestly feel more need to worry about the people then animals. I've run into some absolute NUTs in surprisingly remote places. If I had my way I would just carry an AR10 shoulder slung but that's a bit harder to swing in more occupied areas. I was recently spending some time in Washington state and got introduced to the smith and wesson 500 mag. Which a buddy of mine carries for bears out that way. He convinced me I needed one but to be fair, that isnt a hard thing to do. 😅 1 1

okieman Posted November 1, 2024 Posted November 1, 2024 (edited) In SE Okla I usually carry a Marlin .45-70 with hand loaded 350 grain bullets. During the day that is. At night I have a SCAR 17 7.62x51, 168 grains with a light in case things turn hairy. Always have a Glock 20 on my hip. Edited November 1, 2024 by okieman correction 1 1
Backdoc Posted November 7, 2024 Posted November 7, 2024 When it comes to Bigfoot or other animals and guns I just call Jim from Wild Kingdom

One day not long ago a fellow in the lane next to me at the range was playing with his AR carbine. It had a nice red dot sighting system, and I commented on it. He asked me if I'd like to try it. I politely declined, but then he told me that it was chambered in 10mm. Well, that was a horse of a different color! It was fun. A great shooter. If one likes carbines in handgun chambering, it would be an attractive one. 1

Can still get a whopping 1900fps/2885 ft lbs with 360 gr BB! 1
Trogluddite Posted Tuesday at 07:37 PM Posted Tuesday at 07:37 PM Okay, rhetorical question - what is the minimum gun to carry for this old bear? It's not Bigfoot and not crypto (and not what I was looking for) but I thought folks would like to see it.

Backdoc Posted 12 hours ago Posted 12 hours ago When I was a kid, there was a children's book about the American Indians. They stated some Indians would kill a bear by a usual method: They claimed these hunters would throw the bear (raised on its two legs) a log. As it tried to catch the log the Indian would step forward and hit the bear over the head with a tomahawk. The question: "What weapon do you bring?" Answer: a log and a tomahawk. 1

Huntster Posted 11 hours ago Author Posted 11 hours ago https://lewis-clark.org/sciences/mammals/bears/grizzly-bear-encounters/ Quote ........ the Indians give a very formidable account of the strength and ferocity of this anamal, which they never dare to attack but in parties of six, eight or ten persons; and are even then frequently defeated with the loss of one or more of their party. the savages attack this anamal with their bows and arrows and the indifferent guns with which the traders furnish them, with these they shoot with such uncertainty and at so short a distance . . . that they frequently mis their aim & fall a sacrefice to the bear. . . . this anamall is said more frequently to attack a man on meeting with him, than to flee from him. When the Indians are about to go in quest of the white bear, previous to their departure, they paint themselves and perform all those supersticious rights commonly observed when they are about to make war uppon a neighbouring nation.......... 1
