I had forgotten that this was a two-part story. While looking for old reports from Ohio that Tirademan had found (which I never found), I came across the first half of the story, printed in the Cleveland (OH) Evening Post on June 23, 1868.  As everyone probably guessed, a four-year-old child who wandered off while visiting the islands years ago had since grown to an 8-foot tall, hair-covered man.
