California 1869 (Was 1870) - An Old Hunter's Story - roguefooter!

I was searching for some stories outside of my primary area of interest, the northeast US and eastern Canada, and I found this one.  It sounded familiar and a search of the Forums found Forums member roguefooter appears to have first published it here - by copying and pasting the text apparently - in 2013.  Herewith is that story as published in the Leavenworth (KS) Daily Commercial on November 17, 1870.

 

Update January 2026: Upon further review, the incident reported in this article occurred in the prior fall, or 1869.
