It is difficult to find historical newspaper articles about a possible Bigfoot encounter in one state in the newspapers of that state.  Like this one, the news articles all appear to be in papers from distant states.  So we have news of an 18-inch tall hairy man found in Maine in the Perrysburg (OH) Journal on January 27, 1855.  I believe that this encounter is also mentioned in the The Bigfoot Casebook by Janet and Colin Bord.
