Pennsylvania 1879 - The Insane French Soldier Started Out in Pennsylvania! UPDATED!

Now I feel a little bit better - a tall tale published in Nebraska about what supposedly happened in Pennsylvania is as suspect as a Pennsylvania paper claiming that African lions are roaming the wheat fields of Nebraska.  This earlier recounting is from The Sunbury Gazette and Northumberland County Republican of Sunbury (PA) on November 28, 1879.  I've placed it before the Nebraska article.

Either that, or a lot of French soldiers went insane after they lost a war to Germany.  This report was published in The Red Cloud (NE) Chief on February 12, 1880.  If it sounds familiar, that's likely because a Utah paper reported essentially the same story in 1883, but placed it about forty miles northwest in New York - that story is already uploaded here.
