Though carried in many newspapers, this article from The Buffalo (NY) Commercial published on December 16, 1839.  After a month of these reports, The Wilkes-Barre (PA) Advocate published it's viewpoint on the whole problem on January 8, 1840.  This story is recounted in The Bigfoot Casebook by Janet and Colin Bord.  It sounds familiar to me; if you find I've double-posted, please let me know.
