This article published in The Macon (GA) Telegraph on May 31, 1889, appears to be the earliest version of this story.  This specific version appeared in a column labelled "Round About In Georgia" and recounts two separate incidents that occurred in "the early history" of Habersham County, Georgia.  However, the first incident appears to have occurred in Oconee County, South Carolina.
