Trogluddite Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago The term "Jersey Devil" was used in a few articles prior to this one, but those referred to the licentious atmospheres of northern New Jersey and the Jersey Shore or to the brutal kidnapping of a young girl. This article - from a Montana newspaper recycling what was printed in the New York Sun - is the first I found calling a creature the Jersey Devil. It was published in The Butte (MT) Weekly Miner on February 2, 1893.
