It is clear that the "true" Jersey Devil Story has little relationship to hairy hominid sightings.  However, it is instructive to note that there were "wild man" sightings in New Jersey before and after this outburst of sightings (or bad whiskey or imaginative story telling) that are wholly separate.  This article was published in The Morning Call of Paterson (NJ) on January 22, 1909.
