Virginia 1902 - The Monster of Dismal Swamp

First mentioned in the Rochester (NY) Democrat and Chronicle and several other papers on February 15, 1902.  However, a follow-up story from The Bucyrus (OH) Evening Telegraph on February 18, 1902 suggests that this was a canine, not Bigfoot.  Two months later, an article in The Baltimore (MD) Sun published on April 13, 1902, confirmed that the Dismal Swamp monster was a canine of some sort.
