Fascinating how we see reports from over a century ago with similar details (almost identical) to what we report now. Putting ourselves in these peoples' shoes, what did they have to gain by "hoaxing" this? Word traveled so slow in those days, mostly by newspaper and word of mouth, so there was no instant gratification going on; unlike today where a hoax can go viral in a matter of hours if tagged correctly.
