This reminds me of another article from CA in 1870.

 

The behavior that the reporter describes is spot on with more recent reports. Very interesting encounter, nonetheless. I tend to put more stock into this historic accounts because they had nothing to gain by making this up (for the most part. there could be an eccentric reporter or two who just wanted attention). Word spread pretty slow on those days, so making a claim to fame would not be as fast as uploading a video to youtube today...
