^  Nice story.    I talked to a guy recently at a big city park here who had two basset hounds with him.  He said something just happened that he had never seen before.  A young doe appeared right beside his dogs and it just stayed there, not scared at all.  Those dogs are bred for hunting so, they didn't really know what else to do then, and I guess the doe never got the memo!  Lol

In my neck of the woods you see evidence of salt blocks hidden like that because they are using them to poach elk. Not something you want people to watch you do.

Makes sense but it's also common where I'm at to put out salt for legal hunting purposes. I'd say mainly as an attractant for your nearby game-camera so you can assess the animals that frequent the area. A block works, or just bags of water-softener salt.

Like @PNWexplorersaid, once it's gone they will lick at the ground for years afterwards.

Came down Spread creek from Canuck pass. Had lunch in Yaak Montana.

Drove out to Northwest peak. And then back tracked down the mountain and camping along the west fork of the Yaak river.

I hunted the Canadian side of the Yaak (Yahk in Canada) over about a decade back in the late '80s/early '90s, with some success. On one trip, my wife and I each got a mule deer and a whitetail, and I got a nice 6 pt elk. I have a pre digital photo of my wife standing at a border post on a mountain top with one foot in BC and the other in Montana. Great country to hunt in those days.

Nice shot of the young moose!

I knew that story and was definitely thinking of you on this trip!

We have seen Moose and both Mulies and Whitetail on this trip. No Elk yet.

I could definitely live here. The old bar in Yaak Montana is super cool. Has a vibe about it that reminds me of home but 1970s. Kids riding their dirt bikes on pavement with no helmets. American flags everywhere. Everyone waves. People standing outside drinking beer. Guns hung over the bar.
