xspider1 Posted May 25 Posted May 25 ^ Nice story. I talked to a guy recently at a big city park here who had two basset hounds with him. He said something just happened that he had never seen before. A young doe appeared right beside his dogs and it just stayed there, not scared at all. Those dogs are bred for hunting so, they didn't really know what else to do then, and I guess the doe never got the memo! Lol 1

Not something you want people to watch you do. 17x7 Makes sense but it's also common where I'm at to put out salt for legal hunting purposes. I'd say mainly as an attractant for your nearby game-camera so you can assess the animals that frequent the area. A block works, or just bags of water-softener salt. Like @PNWexplorersaid, once it's gone they will lick at the ground for years afterwards. Edited June 9 by langfordbc 1
norseman Posted July 4 Admin Posted July 4 Came down Spread creek from Canuck pass. Had lunch in Yaak Montana. Drove out to Northwest peak. And then back tracked down the mountain and camping along the west fork of the Yaak river. 2
BC witness Posted July 4 Author Posted July 4 I hunted the Canadian side of the Yaak (Yahk in Canada) over about a decade back in the late '80s/early '90s, with some success. On one trip, my wife and I each got a mule deer and a whitetail, and I got a nice 6 pt elk. I have a pre digital photo of my wife standing at a border post on a mountain top with one foot in BC and the other in Montana. Great country to hunt in those days. Nice shot of the young moose! 1 1

I knew that story and was definitely thinking of you on this trip! We have seen Moose and both Mulies and Whitetail on this trip. No Elk yet. I could definitely live here. The old bar in Yaak Montana is super cool. Has a vibe about it that reminds me of home but 1970s. Kids riding their dirt bikes on pavement with no helmets. American flags everywhere. Everyone waves. People standing outside drinking beer. Guns hung over the bar. Freedom🇺🇸
norseman Posted October 24 Admin Posted October 24 Up by Priest lake on a tight jeep trail for part of it. Bald Mountain area. Saw deer and rubs and a owl. Tamarack is all turning yellow. 1 2
BC witness Posted October 24 Author Posted October 24 Great looking country! I'll have to get busy and post some pics of my recent trip through BC, Yukon, and Northwest Territory. We saw a LOT of wildlife. 1
PNWexplorer Posted Monday at 01:53 AM Posted Monday at 01:53 AM Took a trip through the woods in my Jeep from Idaho over into Washington via Skyline Drive. Beautiful country and just a 15-mile drive from my house. A bit of rain recently, so always looking for tracks. Actually bought two tubs of plaster of Paris for making casts. I've come across a couple of possible tracks in years past, but never was prepared. Now I am. Also added a fun decal to the side of my ambulance RV. And I started the conversion of my utility trailer to an "overlanding" trailer to tow behind my Jeep. It will haul an ATV along with my camping gear while providing a platform for an inflatable tent. I installed fold-up kitchen platform, fuel can, and will be adding a solar shower, water storage, gear storage box, RV lithium battery, solar panel, and inverter. It should let me go camping deep into the woods where the ambulance and Ram 2500 can't go. 1 3
PNWexplorer Posted 15 minutes ago Posted 15 minutes ago Spent the night deep in the Idaho woods last night about 50 miles from home. This is where I found my first possible BF sign; a tree twisted and broke over 8' above the ground. This was about 10 years ago. Today... I forgot how creepy this spot is with virtually no animal activity or sound. I had a horrible time getting a fire started and ended up having to use an old Indian trick by wrapping a paper towel around a stick and dipping it into the fuel tank of my ambulance, lol. Temperature was around freezing when I went inside to watch TV. Had some odd things happen. First was hearing something hit the side of my ambulance from the direction of the twisted tree. Very light. Maybe a pine cone? No trees that it could have fallen from and nothing on the ground. Wet and soggy ground and dusty side of the ambulance. No tracks, no scuff marks, nothing. An hour later, heard what I thought was thunder outside. Looked outside and clear sky with nothing but stars. About another hour later and my dog began growling for no apparent reason. Got the shotgun with slugs out and opened the door to scan with the weapon light. Arlo declined to go outside, so I stayed in as well. No other incidents. Woke up a few hours later and it was very cold outside and inside! Packed up camp the next morning and scouted for elk for my brother on the way back to civilization. Beautiful day and saw a lot of country, but no BF sign. I walked this moist dirt road for about two miles and found hundreds of fresh deer and elk tracks, but no BF tracks.
