BC allows studs for longer than Oregon, Oct. 1 through Mar. 30. They're not common in the coastal valley where I live, but the interior plateau gets much more snow, for much longer, and they're very common there.

Interesting! I wouldn't have thought Oregon would allow them. They also tried to ban them here, but that flew like a lead balloon. They were successful in banning steel studs, but a few years of soft studs caused a rebellion. We're back to steel. South of 60 degrees latitude have less allowable days, and even north of 60 degrees they're trying to pull back on the season. This photo was on Friday in Turnagain Pass @ 2500' elevation. I witnessed a Subaru lose control and hit the guard rail. I had my studded snow tires on my truck, carrying a heavy Bigfoot camper, and pulling @ 4000 lbs of trailer. He was going downhill, and I was climbing. My son-in-law sent a pic looking out their living room window in Anchorage on Saturday. It's full-on winter there. The state had a stud opening date this year of Oct. 1, but last week they had an emergency opening due to snow in Anchorage on Sept. 24, tying the record for earliest recordable snowfall set in 1981.

Wow, it looks like winter has begun--and we're barely out of September!

I'm hearing that a combination of a La Nina, a strong polar vortex, and a southward shift of the jet stream indicates a very harsh winter this year. It seems to be true here in Alaska already.

^^^^ That was the prediction for us into last week though delivered with the reminder that we had a deep La Nina last winter but didn't get the snow or rain that normally comes with it.    This morning's news is that we're looking at a weaker La Nina than last year.

Without getting into the politics / opinions of climate change, I'll just say that in recent years, the relative strength or weakness of La Nina / El Nino .. or even whether they happen .. do not seem to have had the reliable predictive value that they had in the past.   Things seem more chaotic / less predictable even though the science is better able to measure what seemed to be the determining factors more accurately.  "Hmmmm ..."

Sat at trail head this morn being lazy cuz my back hurt from a motorcycle crash yesterday. Sat my electronic caller on my roof and called a cow elk into my back bumper! Ha!

We have seen big bulls, one broadside (75 feet away) lots of elk, lots of mule deer, beautiful place. Just south of Haney meadows off 97.

Just got cell service on this ridge I hiked up. Bumped 12 head of mulies, but they didn't spook, fingers crossed.

Opening day the bulls were hot but now its quieted down abit. I will try and upload pics…. But no spikes seen yet.

I was cleared for all activities. I think i would have preferred my e bike though.

Anyhow I had to come back early, my wifes kidney stone has became infected.

Never seen so many elk in my life. I could have shot 3 6 pt bulls within 100 feet of me if I had a branch antlered bull tag. And all of them were bachelors which means the herd bulls were bigger yet!!

Sorry to hear she's ill, norse. My wife went through that about 6 years ago, not fun! It sounds like she's winning the battle, love and prayers from my family to yours.

@norseman  Speedy recovery to your wife, Norse.

Today I went to put fresh batteries in my trailcams. Moved them to new locations. One was near a beaver dam and I could see two game trails meeting near the east side of the dam. Here are two pictures taken from above and below the dam and a creek that spills out from it. I like the area. We'll see.

Gorgeous pics, W.  We have been spending most of our free time out ourselves, but taking this weekend off for a charity event. Eager to get back out next week.

Norseman makes me so jealous!  The elk herds I grew up hunting over in Idaho have been decimated by wolves and severe weather.  Since I'm a Washington resident, buying a license and tags in Idaho is around $800.  I still try to get out in the woods with my dad and brother but just don't carry a rifle.

I went out in the woods yesterday just to enjoy the weather and nature.  Saw a few tracks, but never saw or heard a single elk, deer, bear, or even a dang grouse.  Sad.  Saw tons of hunting camps being set up, though.  All filled with vehicles with plates from the county South of us, which is infamous for slob hunters and white trash.  Almost got ran off the road by one of them hauling butt in an F250 towing a trailer full of UTVs on a single lane dirt road with blind corners.  I was on my CB calling out mile markers and no response, then that idiot comes flying around a corner on my side of the road and flips me off.

Still, it was a beautiful day!

I started a new position in my company last Monday and now finally get weekends off, work swing shift, and am loving it.  Lost ten pounds the first week just getting normal sleep and being active.
