I think Thomas may have met him back in the day, I'll have to ask him about that. I'll probably see Thomas and the rest of the crew on New Years Day, as we have a little family campfire outing planned, if it's not bucketing rain. Beautiful area. The drive from Williams Lake to Bella Coola is an amazing drive through rugged ranch country then down through the coastal mountains into the Bella Coola valley. Great post, Norseman. Clayton's books (written by his doctor): "Grizzlies and White Guys" and "Bella Coola Man", are two of my all time favourites. Grizzlies and White Guys is mostly about stories when he was a Grizzly hunting guide. I've read it at least half a dozen times. I probably have 10 books on the people and area of Bella Coola. Appears to be a winding road through the coast mountains. I have been to Williams Lake, but it is still a full day to Bella Coola. Williams Lake is a day's drive from Vancouver BC, 519 kilometre. There are also long and expensive ferry trips, at least in summer, from northern Vancouver island. The trip is on my bucket list. BC witness Posted December 28, 2018 Share Posted December 28, 2018 I've only been as far west from Williams lake as Anahim Lake, and that was 20 years ago. I do have an old highschool classmate who has lived in Bella Coola since we graduated in the early 60s. He's been a commercial fisherman out of that port virtually all his adult life, and we still correspond via facebook regularly, and occasionally in person when he ventures down here to the "Big Smoke". BC witness Posted December 29, 2018 Share Posted December 29, 2018 I'm getting lazy in my old age, Old Dog, I forego the blue tarp and use my pop up sunshade in the rain now, I don't have to string lines all over the wet forest to get it up. We sometimes have 4 or 5 of them up around a campfire this time of year. It's raining hard in the valley tonight, snowing above 1,000 ft, but good weather forecast for New Years Day locally, so we're going for it. BC witness Posted January 2, 2019 Share Posted January 2, 2019 Nice find, Madison, I hadn't seen those before. We had great weather here today for the campfire outing, some sun and clouds, near freezing temps, but no rain, so we all had a great time. I brought up Clayton Mack, and it happens that Thomas did meet him, though briefly, a few years before he passed. He said Clayton had some interesting stories, but no evidence to back any of them up. Thomas is big on evidence! It also happens that another member of our group is a distant relative, and that Clayton had a reputation in the family as a tale spinner.
