Ponchos are popular to use in rain and also in cold weather.  I've never used one but would have no reservation trying it. Here is another cold-weather poncho I've eyeballed from Hill People Gear. Their chest pack is the best piece of outdoor equipment, gear, or clothing I've ever owned--bar none.
