While the article states that the wild man wore "a woolen shirt," it later describes his body as being entirely covered with a growth of hair. Could the shirt have been matted hair?

 

Update 16 October 1976: While not the source of this clipping, the earliest this article was published was on January 1, 1878 (meaning that the encounter likely occurred in 1877) in the Daily Arkansas Gazette of Little Rock, Arkansas.
