Canada 1909/07/24 (BC) - Wild Man Terrorizes Pemberton Meadows

Published in the Skagway (AK) Daily Alaskan on July 24, 1909.  While it sounds like a human (using a long pole with a knife attached to the end), I can't help but wonder whether something was lost in translation.
