When I found this story, I thought, holy crap...a very early and absolutely incredible account!

But then I found the original Boston Times and saw it was published April 1st, 1839! Could it be?

Later, I came across a couple of commentaries on it, which also reach a fictional conclusion.

These point out how sasquatch was well known back then, but also occasionally treated tongue in cheek! I've found several fictional newspaper stories about the "wild man of the woods," mostly in the children's sections.
