Guest SquatchinNY
On my one [and only] Squatching trip bac in JAN, we observed [and have video evidence!] of a structure made out of 3 trees. The adult present may have said he observed signs of something laying there. Even if this one is just natural, is it possible Squatches use stick structures as observation shelters? The ollowing is a rough 'map' of the campsite. The black squares are cabins, while the grey rectangle is a boy scout shelter. The asterik is the tree shelter, and the green lines are where we were shooting airsoft. Our location is here, shown on Google Earth. Was there a bigfoot there that knocked, and used that tree shelter? Or is it too good to be true?
Guest
I've always assumed they were hunting blinds or observation shelters,. Anything to break up their silhouette yet still allow a vast view.
Guest scooterdad
I guess it's possible but why so close to a camp? Seems to me that if it's as close to human activity that more than likely it's man made. Just thinking out loud ... Maybe you can share the video? Guest
YES! This is exactly what I've been thinking this week since finding one on Monday. It was too unfinished to be a shelter or a nest and that just was bothering me... or else BF got interrupted making it and abandoned it. The one I found was in a very strange place on the edge of a day use picnic area by a local mountain remote lake. BUT it makes very good sense if you wanted to sit there and wait for deer to come down to the grassy area and to the lake to drink without them seeing you... It's not a nest or a shelter - it's a blind like hunters use!
Guest SquatchinNY
When I get the videos from the rip, I will be making a little 'show' out of them. Pray I get the vids soon!
Guest Mudder
Why have I never thought or read about these structures as BF's hunting blinds? I think that's the answer right there. It's very obvious. It's not a sign of territory or a display of power -- It's a bigfoot's hunting blind or "lookout booth." Guest
The "blind" I found was on the edge of a large grassy area above the swimming beach of an isolated local lake. Beach, grass, parking lot, highway, forest - the layers from the lake to forest. So, game comes down from the forest for grazing and water at this nice little day use park and - bada bing! - dinner is served for the big dude. That is said rather tongue in cheek, but it does show several potential things, if it was built by BF. First off, it shows a good knowledge of game animals and their habits; two - it shows pre-planning on BF's part to build it there when presumably no game is present and wait for it; three - it doesn't appear to eat there (didn't see any bones tucked away anywhere from former meals. So - does it take it's meal and head back into the forest to eat it? Does it take it and share it deliberately? That implies social order and relationships and, and, and... oh, so many possibilities from a few sticks of wood. To be a fly on the wall.... I'd sure love to get past speculation and see evidence. I'm assuming BF to be an omnivore, because of bipedalism and potential brain size. Big brains need high-fat, high-protein brain-building calorie foods like meat. I am considering this omnivore to hunt when necessary and scavenge when possible and forage always. I"m an omnivore and I browse from the pantry to the fridge to the cupboards.... When we revistited the site in June the blind was partially dissasembled. Do you have pics of the blind you saw for comparison? Does it have an opening in the front that faces the game trail? Guest
Yes, there was a distinct opening facing the grass/beach area. It was closed on the backside facing the lake.
kbhunter
Well, interesting topic here. I found a structure and there was deer hair around it, deer skulls and neck bones close by and I even found a fresh deer kill!! It had a broken neck. We left it there, later a couple of days later was a HUGE pile of crapola!! Here are a few pics!! KB
Guest Mudder
^ Wow. This is the best thread in the entire universe. I know what else I'm going to be keeping an eagle eye out for -- Something that blends in perfectly with the woods -- Stick/tree structures. Wish me luck with that one, lol. This creature really is something. I guess birds build nests, spiders build webs, beavers build dams -- but, for some reason, thinking that a 600+ lb hairy animal, that walks like us, building something to camo themselves in order to ambush its food, is something to behold. Guest WesT
Yes, there was a distinct opening facing the grass/beach area. It was closed on the backside facing the lake. About 3 feet directly in front of the opening is a bent over cedar/pine tree that is held down at the top by a log. The game trail passes in between the bent over tree and the opening of the blind. At first we were bafflad a bit at what we were looking at. Then my partner suggested that as the deer passed in front of the opening the bent over tree was used as a bacing mechanism so the spear doesn't just knock the animal over. I've got pics if you want to see them.
Guest MikeG
There is a danger inherent in threads like these. What is essentially speculation will soon be accepted as fact, and passed on by all in the BF community (whatever that is) as received wisdom. kbhunter
Agreed MikeG. As I posted my stuff here, was to show I have found a interesting correlation to the structure I found and the area of recent and past deer kills. It very well could be a marked showing the hunting area or something to that affect. KB Edited September 12, 2012 by kbhunter
