JDL Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 Do the middens look anything like these? http://natureofaman.blogspot.com/2012/02/living-in-sticks.html Not the ones I've found. They usually contain bones from animals as large as a raccoon or possum, apparently eaten raw. But, I'd imagine that such a nest could be used as the basis for a midden with a shelter constructed around it.
JDL Posted May 15, 2015 Posted May 15, 2015 I'd like to reboot this topic to see if anyone has seen anything else along these lines in the last year. Also, there was a video posted on here a while back where an investigator filmed a crude shelter from a distance. It was during the spring thaw, and a lot of steam (but no smoke) was coming out of the top of the shelter. It was interesting to me because it is exactly what would happen as snow covering a shelter containing a heating midden would thaw. The snow, which would act as insulation at temperatures well below freezing would melt through the roof onto the midden during the thaw, and the midden would be hot enough at its center to vaporize the water. If anyone could find that video (I've tried), I would be interested in seeing it again.
