Guest Stan Norton Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 Update from the UK: how do they miss the pine martens? https://birdguides.com/webzine/article.asp?a=5119 "This is incredibly exciting. Pine Martens were thought to be extinct in England and there is now a possibility that they may have been living here right under our noses for a long time."
norseman Posted August 3, 2015 Admin Posted August 3, 2015 did you read the comments section? A naysayer there as well......
Guest Stan Norton Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 Yep. And that's for a known species. Some people are just endearingly special...
Guest DWA Posted August 4, 2015 Posted August 4, 2015 Update from the UK: how do they miss the pine martens? https://birdguides.com/webzine/article.asp?a=5119 "This is incredibly exciting. Pine Martens were thought to be extinct in England and there is now a possibility that they may have been living here right under our noses for a long time." While we're on endearingly special, it's really funny how few people seem to understand how easy it is for something to evade the notice of people who: 1) are paid to say it's not there; 2) are paid to keep management headaches to a minimum; 3) don't know what that "funny looking cat or fox or something" is that they just saw (or "that big guy in hoodie and sweatpants"); 4) don't think it's unusual and don't know that it is; 5) don't want anyone who might hurt it or cage it to know; 6) know it can't be there so anyone seeing one would have to be mistaken and those obviously aren't marten prints because they can't be; 7) ...do I really need to keep going here?
Guest DWA Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 Be sure to have one pointing backward. One of the biggest bears I have seen...I saw crossing the road in the rear-view mirror.
hiflier Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 Hello Norseman, ho hum.....Im trying to figure out how to mount this to the cab roof of my Ram! When I two Sons and I went out last October (again this coming Oct. ) My oldest stated that he was wondering if he would have time to mount the 33 iinch wheels on the Jeep, install the 5,000 lb Warner reversible winch, and bolt on the Roof Mounted Sasquatch Net Launcher . Looks as though you may beat him to the punch?
Trogluddite Posted August 7, 2015 Posted August 7, 2015 ho hum..... Im trying to figure out how to mount this to the cab roof of my Ram! Gorilla glue?

Many thanks for that Stan, I hadn't heard about it over here. We have a very small number in Wales only a few miles away and I've always wanted to see one but never have.

Another interesting thing, since they are in the Cascades, is I compared a pine marten skull to the impressions in our bone evidence. Not a match, but an interesting coincidence.
Guest DWA Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 ^^^One should note here that the pine marten and the American marten are different species: http://www.arkive.org/pine-marten/martes-martes/ (pine) http://www.arkive.org/american-marten/martes-americana/ (Amer.)
BigTreeWalker Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 Yes I know. But except for a possible size difference the skulls are about the same. Sorry, should have been more specific.

I not sure that the relation is between European and American species, but rather that an animal can remain hidden from experts and scientists in a somewhat comparable situation, in that we have no wilderness at all ( in fact no matter where you are in the British Isles are you no further than 17 miles from a road ) and do not record an animal of that size for over one hundred years and a certain other animal that is undiscovered in a country of many hundred square miles of wilderness.
