norseman Posted September 18, 2022 Admin Posted September 18, 2022 Heard two whoops today and some wood knocks. 🤷🏻♂️ I thought it might be loons but the 3 birds on the lake looked small for loons. I poked around while Wyatt fished. Caught all small rainbow…. Mystic lake, Moon lake, Browns lake. We got kicked off Browns lake. Fly fishing only. We did see a 6 pt bull go out past us in a pickup. Oct 1st I will be heading back in for muzzle loader Elk. Big burn in there. Lots of grass. 1 1
cmknight Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 That looks like fantastic country. I wouldn't mind throwing a fly or two there! 1
wiiawiwb Posted September 18, 2022 Posted September 18, 2022 That's great to get both whoops and woods knocks. Of course, they always happen when the sound recorder is off. Beautiful area and very promising as well. Do you plan on returning there? It would be interesting to see if the whoops and wood knocks increased at night.

Here is the lake. https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/colville/recarea/?recid=72072
PNWexplorer Posted September 21, 2022 Posted September 21, 2022 I've been doing a bit of off-road riding on my 2022 KLR 650. I hated this bike when I first bought it and thought it's only purpose was to kill older men like me who thought it would be fun to buy an adventure bike to feel young again. I have since added a ton of accessories, more aggressive tires, and 700 miles on it mostly in the woods. I am now comfortable on it and have taken it a couple of places that I shouldn't have, lol. I added a Go-Pro camera and mount and have it running on a 3-minute recording loop in case a BF happens to show itself during a ride. Nothing so far. Last ride was up to Moscow Mountain where there was a sighting featured on Finding Bigfoot a few years ago. Wildfires in the area produced too much smoke for there to be any long-distance sightings. 1 1
PNWexplorer Posted September 28, 2022 Posted September 28, 2022 Planning on heading into the mountains for an impromptu overnight camping trip this weekend. My plan is to take my 4Runner to a remote spot and just camp out of it. I have a twin-size air mattress that I hope will be comfy with the rear seats folded down. I used a tape measure and there is right at 6' of room. I am 6'2", so figure sleeping at an angle will be fine. It will likely get below freezing at the elevation I'm thinking of, so sleeping in the confined space of the 4Runner with engine heat available and in a good sleeping bag and thick comforter should be fine. I will be absolutely alone, with no dog or girlfriend to keep me company. Should be good for attracting the attention of any BF in the area. I plan on sitting around a campfire, with a good whiskey, some good tunes on the satellite radio, and will have a Go-Pro and new Samsung Galaxy Ultra 21 phone at the ready. I would love to hear some wolf howls, but a wood knock would be really cool. I had a conversation with a co-worker about his BF experience when hunting a couple of years ago and he heard grunts, roars, and howls that he could feel in his gut. He said whatever was making the noise was under 50 yards from his tent in the middle of nowhere in WA state. I would love to have a similar experience, but he was visibly shaken when recounting what he and his dad went through that night. Just another BF witness that will never go public with their encounter and still unable to acknowledge that BF is real, despite their own incredible encounter. 1
cmknight Posted September 28, 2022 Posted September 28, 2022 Good luck and make sure you have some sort of defensive weapon handy. It is the season when bears are getting ready to hunker down, and the little buggers ARE hungry!
Kiwakwe Posted October 1, 2022 Posted October 1, 2022 (edited) Got up North a short ways for an overnight grouse hunt/ BF walkabout in an area with a relatively recent Class B. Covered about 12 miles on foot, down 2-track and overgrown logging spurs. Heard 2 grouse and a gaggle of turkeys, all remained unscathed, by me at least, though I saw no one else while I was there. Very little coyote sign and no owls heard but did have a visitor in camp. M.O. per the usual, after dinner at dusk, which consisted of 2 Imperial ales and jalepeno-lime tortilla chips while sitting at camp along the shore of a small pond amidst a troop of late warblers and a winter wren--catching and eating stuff a little more substantial, I started walking again down the 2 track I parked off of. Went about 3/4 mile in either direction in the gathering darkness then up an overgrown spur til I was lightly impaled in the face because I don't like using a light. Maundered back to camp by 9:15 got set up for sleeping in the back, turned in to read lying down using a small book lamp, windows open and about 2' from the treeline and woods. 15 min later I hear a twig snap and light movement about 20' into the mostly spruce/ balsam trees and underbrush. Turn off the book lamp, grab flashlight and wait in anticipation to see what's coming at me. My head is below the 1/2 open window (they slide front to back), looking out and up at the silhouette of trees against the starry sky, a tad more sound then the whole window frame goes dark, all blotted out by a massive creature that I don't even hear. Hit the light to see a big ole bull moose with quite a rack 6" from the truck strolling by. He turns back to give me a glare as I'm clearly parked on his turf. Cool sighting. Recorder out, lasted about 6 hours with nary a peep of out-of-the-ordinary nor even ordinary night sounds. Next day spent taking the old shotgun for a walk, lots and lots of moose tracks, bear tracks in a couple of places, no coyote tracks nor scat. Snapping turtles look like they had a good hatch by a sandy patch down by the river but no BF sign. Moose squeezed by there on the R side Nice little pond: 2-track getting re-claimed: The old J.P. Sauer & Son, taking a break like a gen z'er, it's done no work:) Great little brook, flows out of a bog at the base a ridge top covered in house sized glacial erratics, bear den central: Edited October 1, 2022 by Kiwakwe typo 1 3

Great little rifle... On my hip at all times will be my Springfield Armory XD-M OSP Elite 3.8" 10mm loaded with 200 grain HSM "bear Loads". I'm the most dangerous thing in the woods, lol. 4
