Beautiful country Explorer and BC.  Love the mountains.

Headed to the cabin in northern MN this weekend.  Sounds like I might need to bring my winter coat as it is only only a few miles from the BWCA.

Love it up there this time of year though as all of the jet skis are off of the lake and the animals start showing themselves more often.

Did you get close to any bulls? Bugle any in?

Beautiful country, BTW, very similar to the area I was in the last 2 weekends. I was just a few miles N of the Pasayten Wilderness, E of Manning Park, BC. Camped at 6600', I was forced out about noon on Sunday by heavy snowfall, going horizontal in 30mph winds.

Thanks all.

They weren't bugling yet. I talked to someone that was scouting for muzzleloader hunting, he said in that area they were starting to bugle about the last week of September. I've noticed that myself over the last few years. I couldn't get anything interested in any of my calls. I only heard one bull answer a hunter's bugle once during the two weeks we were out, and it headed in the opposite direction. I know from talking to others that they were bugling elsewhere in SW WA the 1st of September. Must be the elevation difference. We were about 4000'. Even the huckleberries and mushrooms we usually see were later this year. It might have something to do with all the snow in late winter and early spring pushing everything later.

Things are late this year in SW WA.    I have an Autumn Purple ash that is normally dumping leaves by this time of year.      I would have made several trips to the leaf dump by now.    But it is just starting to shed leaves.    Has not even been close to frosting yet either.    I used to marvel how it would frost earlier here in SW WA than in Minneapolis.   Of course Minneapolis kept getting colder when it did.  They are talking nearly 85 degree days next week so that has to mess up what the elk and deer are doing too.

And winter is coming early again this year it seems.

It was quite warm the 1st part of September. Then it cooled off and rained for a week. But we didn't get any frost. In previous years when the elk were bugling and answering calls it was frosting almost every morning.

Just back from my final BWCA trip of the year. It was pretty miserable. Cold and windy except for a brief window Saturday evening when the wind died down for a few hours. Only got in a couple hours of fishing due to the wind. That is the one downside to canoe tripping, wind is the boss. The solitude is still worth making the trip. EE9E535B-E8BB-4FD1-8BB7-01405D00F14F.jpeg

This was from the 20 minutes of sun we had.

Just realized I’m finally off BFF probation, yeah to me...

The woolly bear caterpillar I saw in central western Washington lately was half and half.

The old mountaineers in the So. Apps. predicted winter on the basis of red/black coloration patterns on said catty.

I guess that means about normal for central western Washington on the basis of an n=1

It got down to 37 deg at sea level in places the other evening so they better get somewhere fast.

  • 2 weeks later...

I was up on the north shore of Lake Superior this week to get in 2 last days of hiking. Wednesday started off quite cold (28 degrees and windy) and had about 1” of snow on the trail when we started. The snow melted quickly in areas that got morning sun. Trail condition was generally poor, muddy, icy and slippery in many places. Hiked the last 2 sections approximately 10 miles in around 7 hours including stops. The northern terminus of the trail overlooks the Pigeon River valley (US/Canada border). Thursday was a much nicer day, upper 50s. Hiked from Lutsen Mtn to Caribou Trail about 6.5 miles in 4 hours. I was breaking in new hiking boots (Asolo Flames). Boots worked great with a bit of adjustment.

www.superiorhiking.org if anyone’s interested. Trail is 310 miles long, mostly follows the ridgeline above Lake Superior from MN/WI border all the way to US/Canada border. I’ve probably done about 1/3 through the years. Someday would like to do the thru hike but getting the wife to let me take 3-4 weeks to do it has proven difficult.

The last pic was a fresh moose track that was not there 45 minutes before when we came through and then “summited” the final overlook at the end of the trail. Also saw some deer, found wolf and bear scat but the pics didn’t turn out...
