Guest Theagenes
King's Canyon, try to just focus on facial features like nose, upper lip, browridge, etc. Try to imagine these faces with more hair if you can. Unfortunately the hair and skin color on these reconstructions of hominins is pure conjecture by the artists.
Guest OntarioSquatch
Keep in mind all of those pics are reconstructions of what they could have possibly looked like. The accuracy might just be way off.
Guest Yeti1974
Another interesting poll question might be: "If you were to see a Bigfoot, which of these would you most expect it to look like?"
Guest
These images were on the FB page 'I f------ love science' a few days ago. Guest
D. because its supposedly a Gigantopithecus. M. looks like a drug dealer that lives down the block, and K. looks like a guy I played football with in high school.
Guest Theagenes
These images were on the FB page 'I f------ love science' a few days ago. (Sorry mods...That's what it's called:) My fav FB page ever! Close. It was the "I F----ing Love Science" that gave me the idea, but I noticed that their image had been photoshopped and manipulated to make the hominins all look more similar. The IFLS image is below. For example, H. antecessor and H. sapiens have the same mouth and nose just slightly tweaked. So I tried to do the same but I went around to museum sites and got real reproductions and stitched it all together. So since we have enough responses to see something of a pattern, here is the "key" the examples in the poll: A. Sahelanthropus B. Paranthropus robustus C. Kenyanthropus D. Gigantopithicus E. Australopithecus afarensis F. Australopithecus sediba G. Paranthropus boisei H. Homo habilis I. Homo erectus J. Homo ergaster K. Homo antecessor L. Homo floresensis M. Homo heidelbergensis N. Homo neaderthalensis O. Homo sapiens (Red Deer Cave Man) Edited December 27, 2012 by Theagenes
Guest
Bigfoot would have to be much more ape than early human... right?
Guest
The one that I got the best look at looked a lot like this one. The nose was much smaller & turned up on the end. The skin was lighter, & the face didn't seem as hairy. http://tinyurl.com/bo7y8zu This image is very similar to what I saw. Mine was a little thinner in the face
Guest
I wonder if the poll would be affected by a different arrangement of pics (random), rather than the "least to most human looking" arrangement I perceive.
Guest Theagenes
I wonder if the poll would be affected by a different arrangement of pics (random), rather than the "least to most human looking" arrangement I perceive. You may be right I think the lack of hair on many of those reconstructions is a problem as well. I think some people might be picking "D" because it has the most sasquatch-like hair, not necessarily because of the facial morphology. Likewise, some of the None of the Aboves might have chosen one of the examples if they had more sasquatch-like hair. But from those who did choose, there seems to be a preference for the bipedal ape types rather than the more human-like hominins.
Guest
I'd say that a lot of the details of the face, which I only glimpsed briefly, were obscurred by the hair. I'd say if anything about the face was focused on, it were the eyes. Also the HAIR on the head was attention grabbing.
Guest
Great topic! It would interesting to add the location (state) as a cross reference.
Guest
None of the examples really did it for me. I have a pic somewhere on the web done by a member of BF 1.0 that was almost exactly like what I saw.
Guest
which example got the most votes?
Guest
Skyla, just click on the "show results" button in the poll. So far "Other" has the most, with D (Gigantopithecus reconstruction) behind that... Edited December 29, 2012 by notgiganto
