Here's another pic of the stone ax.......believe too big for a skinner. I find hundreds of skinner tools, several pictured, and are usually this size, plus an old fossilized bone.

Blazed a new trail yesterday, and found another killing zone in a relatively small area........some of the unfortunate victims.

Sure do have a LOT of dead deer there... either you have LOTS of hunters who are bad shots... or something is killing those deer.

it's not people IMO because they would take the racks off the bucks.

Approx. how many deer kills do you think you have run across out there?

And do you think the drought conditions contributed?

Hey Rex......several dozens of dead Deer and other animals, but not sure about the drought. I have game cameras in various locations, and the wild game seems to be moving around OK, and they look healthy.

Have you ever found any "fresh" kills out there and if you have, what were the conditions of the carcass?

i am asking because i found one in PA once that was still steaming..   the back legs were broken and the gut cavity was ripped open. The liver was hanging out but nothing was eaten,,, it was however stuffed up under an old building which was the only thing like that within miles.

It was an OLD train station for a rail line that no longer existed from the 1850's.

The back legs were what puzzled me because there was no way that one was hit by a car out there, it was literally 15 miles to the nearest road.

i wrote it off as a panther or bear and kept extra alert while I was there but saw nothing out of the ordinary.

I do find them fresh, pretty much anytime I want to in certain areas.......will go today and check for 'new arrivals'. I usually avoid these areas when hiking late, like I do in the summer, and to try avoid my pups mixing it up with all the various diners in that area that show up after dark:)

If they are dismembered, with the pieces scattered within a 30ish yard radius, it's usually Coyotes or Wolves, with the Alpha's feeding on the main carcass, and subordinates close by with a piece. Big Cats & Bears will try to drag it off and hide it (have not seen any Bear sign around here yet, but they are coming soon).

Then I find weird kills like you described above, with wounds and breaks not synonymous with the type of predator kills described above. I always feel creepy around these kills, and even my dogs feel skittish. I've also noticed that other animals tend to leave these alone for a week or so, maybe they smell some bad juju as well?

When you do find those..  do some photo documentation of them.  Close-ups of the injuries etc.

It could lead us to better understand their hunting style.

Hiked over to one of the killing zones yesterday evening, had a late start, so couldn't do much exploring before it got dark, and heard a rather large Coyote pack howling and banding up nearby, time to go!

Here are some typical bones from a Coyote or Wolf kill, with the pieces separated for the pack members to eat in peace, and none of the broken & dislocated leg bones that are seen in a BF kill.

Lucy the Wolf even volunteered to play the part of the feeding carnivore:)

There is obviously a human hair genome that can be turned on and off.......always amazes me when I see these pictures. Could be dangerous if they were hiking in an area where the 'Pro Kill' guys were hangin', especially if they were skinny dipping:)

Just having a bit of fun with the Pro Kill guys, but it does make you wonder.

Hey Rex......check out this video, it's a re-post from a while back, and towards the end is an interesting fairly fresh kill.

  • 2 weeks later...

Here are some more interesting stone tools......the first one is just beautifully made, and must have been a precision cutting tool for detailed work, notice the perfect finger groves for grip & leverage, also the very small 'blade', and marked with the red arrow, with the blue marks for the thumb. Also shown in hand, with finger groves on the back side. What enters my mind when holding this tool is surgical work.

The last two pictures seem to be some kind of hand hammer, and interestingly, with finger groves to hold with either the right or left hand. Both end tips are darker, and show signs of use. Red lines are for thumbs, blue for fingers, and green for the ends.......both really interesting tools.

Thanks Cervelo.......here's another cool one, and looks to be some kinda grinding tool. Hard to tell in the pictures, but both sides are domed, the rough side fits firmly in hand, with a nice nap for the thumb, and is where the control comes from, with the other smooth side for grinding. This tool was made for a lefty too.

I always enjoyed finding artifacts at my family's cabin in New Mexico. Never found anything major, just a few arrow heads and pieces. But others have found flintlock rifle remains, knives, numerous stone tools and other stone tools, pottery and even Cival War era artifacts. Great stuff....keep it up.
