How To Have An Encounter...

Someone mentioned on another thread that it isn't that hard to have an encounter, as long as you follow the "Data Points."

I am curious if there is a way to guarantee that you encounter a squatch. My two encounters were random, unexpected, and twenty four years apart, so I must have accidentally stumbled upon the method, twice.

Let's get the ball rolling...

Is there a method to see, definitively, a Sasquatch?

Spend a lot of time in an area with a history of BF sightings and activity.

Or go on one of these expeditions that some BF groups charge $300 plus dollars. I'm sure they will guarantee an encounter. LOL

No.

But you can put yourself in certain positions to better your chances, for sure.

There's never a guarantee, because it's mostly THEIR choice as to whether or not they choose to let you see them.

I ran into the ones I have encountered accidently the first time. Had no idea they were there.

AFTER that, however, I seem to have also unwittingly done a few things right, because I've had three more interactions, all their choice - I just put myself out there where they were.

And here' s my advice from what I think I did right.

Don't try to sneak up on them, even to the point of whistling to let them know I am there. Don't worry their sentinel that you could be a threat so he removes his family or your chance is gone.

Do something interesting - I arrived in the same place to whistle/knock with them the second time, picnicked nearby with a 5-week old baby in a sling the third time and brought them goodies at an unexpected time the fourth time (which, frankly, they didn't seem happy about). Next time, I am going to spend an early evening collecting river plant samples and bagging them for an hour or so. Pique their interest.

Do not bring flashlights or cameras or weapons, if you are at dusk or night.

Don't appear threatening in any way. Personally, I would never wear camo because that's what hunters wear. Respect that this is THEIR home and try not to act like a jerk. Be a good house guest.

If you see or hear anything, act cool - hey no big deal. Don't stare and point. Don't demand they interact. Don't be a Mr. bossy pants.

Talk peacefully and try not to yell at your son who isn't listening tho I'm sure a foot is 50 feet from him and he's arguing about leaving and won't return the frogs.

Come back and do the same non-threatening, interesting things weekly if you can.

And lastly, of course, go where they are. And maybe leave a gift when you go.

Then, do what I DIDN'T do and keep quiet about it, especially about the location. Don't endanger them.

P.S. We didn't mean to use the babies as bigfoot bait!

Wonderful advice, Madison! I totally agree that's the way to go (I haven't had any encounters, but my gut feeling is that this is just right).

What weren't they happy about when you brought them food? The timing? Or the food?

Did you report your first, unexpected sighting at all? I would love to read about it. Were you scared? Are you ever scared when you make your return visits?

Yes, yes and yes! It's still at the BFRO. They are trying to tease out the knocking and whistling from my four crappy cell phone recordings. Not sure how much of the four reports they'll post. But you can read most of it on here in various places anyway or I can PM you.

I just got the feeling on the fourth encounter that I was pushing my luck. We went at dusk, it got dark very quickly, basically into "their" territory, possibly surprising them, and were escorted out with unhappy vocalizations and a huge branch snap as we were 100 yards from the car. Scared the crud out of me.

Where did the whole sentinel Bigfoot idea come from? Is it a Todd Standing invention or was it mentioned by someone else before he ever did?

I think most bigfoots that are sighted are sentinals/look outs. Just makes sense if you are mostly a nocturnal species, that someone has to stay awake while the others sleep to make sure you are all safe. Logical.

Madison, I've been thinking about the camo thing for awhile too. I really have been wondering if they stay away from people in camo because they relate camo with hunters. I keep meaning to start a thread asking people what they think about it, but I haven't for some reason. It first occurred to me on the first trip I went on. I showed up with no camo because I didn't own any and everyone was in full camo so it just made me think about it.

I do think there are times where it is good to wear camo though. For instance, if you are in a tree stand or just going to sit in an area for a very long time and not make any noise.

I'm not doubting that they may employ a sentinel, it does make sense, I just never saw it called that before until Todd Standing called them that and I was just wondering if he was the one that originally came up with that name/theory.

There's nothing wrong with wearing camo. I wore camo when I had my third sighting.

Another hunter I met was wearing camo when he had his sighting. If he would have been wearing bright colors, the BF probably would have seen him and not walked in front of him.

Thanks CMBigfoot. That's the kind of feedback I've been looking for. I've never talked to anyone about it so I wanted to know if my theory had any merit.
