Stick Structures?

what would be the point in a bf making a structure like that? it doesn't seem to protect them from the environment with out any additional branches or grass to pile on top of it. I do think it is possible they are making these structures, just trying to understand why.

Hey everyone,

Late to this thread so sorry if this is ground already covered, I tried to skim the thread as best I could.

My first question for everyone is why would humans be doing this? I don't see any point. Kids playing?

Second, I am sure some of these are natural structures, that actually accounts for many of the pics I see here, IMO.

Lastly, and as a response to the quote:

I see 4 potential reasons for this behavior if in fact its caused by a BF.

The laid/stacked sticks may be marking territory or some form of communication between different BF families.

Second is dominance/territorial displays. These seem to be the broken trees up high. What else says I'm big stay out better than a 5" broken tree 9 feet up?

3rd, there may be some attempts here to create a structure to hide in while hunting.

4th, it may be a temporary shelter.

@reelback, I can go with your reasons, 1 & 2.....but 3 and 4 just dont make sense to me. Those structures provide no shelter and would not hide a bf for hunting. It seems they would be better off doing what they normal do and blending in and hiding behind trees. Some of these structures also seem too small to hide or shelter a creature 7ft tall. I dont think humans are doing most of the structures, but im sure a small percentage is done from humans. ( why not...people waste their time making fake tracks? ) No one crucify me for this thought.....but I was thinking what if these structures were a way of a bf being "creative"...a form of art to express themselves. ( a very primal way ) Its just a thought. :buba:

3 and 4... I've seen some that are rather elaborate. I wouldnt discount them being places where hunters camoflouge themselves. I dont hunt, so is this something a hunter may do?

Its possible there are a few Picasso's in the BF world, maybe instead of territory, its a form of art to others? Unlikely but certainly possible.

If the structures were charted you might be able to demarcate a flow of them and a boundary line, or some other commonality among them.

I have heard of different meanings behind the type of structures, but I feel like I cannot know any of this for myself, unless I get the chance to ask a Sasquatch ; )

I do have a feeling that some of the real ones have a function that has to do with location and hunting and food sources and that some of them have to do with their culture and perhaps they are for the little ones...

Having lived in a couple of teepee structures myself (not long term people ), I know what is required to consider something like that a shelter. It takes alot of branches and foliage to keep out the elements. Ok I might go with hunting.......maybe, but bfs using these structures as shelters seems highly unlikely to me. We really have to think out of the box because these creatures are not your "typical" animal. They are possibly capable of language ( bf chatter ).... so doesn't the possibility of these structures being used for more than a means of survival seem plausible.

A tree that has been bowed over is no big deal. The big deal is when you find one that is bowed over and still alive but have been denuded of all it's branches. Those get my attention.

Yes VX, I have good reason to believe that they are there so the little ones can find thier way home. Be careful if you plan on following them to the main shelter. When you think you've hit an impenetrable dead end, your actually close to the destination.

Hey Wes, that is interesting...

What do you think of this, there is a steep rugged hillside that has structures on either side, at the base is a very overgrown brush with a dark entrance...it is pretty big.

I accidentally walked very close to it a week or two ago and heard a brief low raspy growl and I got up that hill very quickly...needed no encouragement, lol.

This is the area that my dog looks down and acts nervous when we are above it, he has always glanced down there like he sees something I cannot see.

I would think it was a bear, but I really do not think they are here where I live

Where's home? Underground?

Oh. Something I forgot to add about the 3 "teepee" strucures above. All were on the side of a steep hill. All on the East side of the respective roads they were positioned near. Which makes me wonder if they aren't some type of crude sundials to give them some ability to gauge NESW orientation, time left for daylight, or which season was approaching.

Or they could simply be Mimicking a campfire, with a childlike reasoning. Ie: By building it like the "humans" do, maybe it will create fire. And fire would equal power, and mastery over their environment. .....Or maybe I'm out of my gourd.

And here's one "teepee," which I believe is naturally occuring. And simple tree breaks(which can be simple storm damage), but I believe are made in a straight line as a simple trail markers.

When I came up on it I thought it was a dead end. Nowhere else to go, it was to large and thick to penetrate or get around. It was located on the western side of a high hill about midway up. A couple of days later it dawned on me that if they are indeed out there, and as reclusive as they are, a nearly inpenetrable structure (natural or not) would be where I would be if I were them. So I did as I always do and checked to see what a Gorilla does. A Gorilla pulls the forest (around them) on top of them for seclusion when bedding down to sleep. I thought "well there ya go". What I saw was the forest piled up in a very large inpenetrable heap.

Yeah, exercise caution. I'm a bit apprehensive about going back out there to do a more indepth investigation because we also saw alot of child sized footprints in the area.

What I think you found is similar to what I found. A possible temporary shelter.

]Hey Wes, That sounds completely logical, do you have any pix of the prints you found, would love to compare it to the one print of something or other that I just found.

It was just to the right of the area that I wonder about maybe 30 yards.

Here also are more structures for your viewing pleasure, lol!

Justt realized I am having trouble finding the ones I have taken recently, half way blaming my SO, perhaps he has deleted them in sabotage, lol!

BFF Patron

Very cool, I see alot of those bottom type weaves with smaller layouts that are perfect equilaterals, many A-shaped repetitions sometimes like spokes on a wheel or points on a compass. Very intriguing when you see the repetitions.

What about a simple observation shelter? What if it wanted to hide it's eyeshine at night.
