  1. It's ridiculous to think forests are in decline. A forest needs to be managed not left in some wild pristine state. Left alone sets it up for nature to take its course, which many times is not pretty. Something even more ridiculous is saying we need to set forest more aside for wildlife. The government, state and federal, own much of this country. Everyone here has a forestry department in their state, even they know the true facts of Americas forest land. It is in wonderful shape, and BF has proven many times, it doesn't need us providing it a sanctuary. By the way, my avatar is the end of a beautiful veneer cherry log from the Alleghany National Forest, where the finest cherry in the world grows. It is world renowned for its color, tightness of grain and lack of defects. No other land area grows it better.

  2. Bobby: It has been my experience over the years that on clear nights just before, after and during a full moon BF are the least active. I now seldom camp during those periods, and infrequently go out on those nights to try to locate a particular group by listening for their vocalizations. All my field work has been done in twelve southeastern states. My theory is that since BF apparently has great night vision during the darker moon phases, and recognizes that humans don't, he may think humans and the game he hunts are able to easily see him under the light of a bright moon. On moonlight nights with heavy cloud cover I suspect they forage and hunt as usual.

  3. Hey everyone, I have been very busy out in the field the past couple weeks and I will soon be back out again. The best pros/features are 60 Hrtz video recording { not the super jumpy video recording witch often in most thermal monocular systems is around 9 frames per second }, rugged construction, manual focus, external power via 12 volt input, easy to use up against optical glasses, instant still photos at a touch of a button { very fast and easy with very little if any image smearing on a moving subject }, great resolution for the price range but it should be noted that it is a digital output to 320X240 but the senor has a native resolution of 160X120, 9 color pallets from white hot to color spectrum to instalert, ultra easy controls and very easy to use in complete darkness as there are no switches, knobs or clips to mess with, just 4 buttons and the battery door clip latch and a finally a tripod mount. Now the cons > 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours on 4 AA's { not terrible but not as good as some of the newer FLIR models }, 15 to 20 second power up to image time, this can be critical for night operations where a subject is moving away but again not terrible but note worthy, external power cable plugin is in the front of the unit beside the lens and can be a bit cumbersome to move around with while rigged for external power { not a huge issue for me as I use this feature mostly on a tripod for DVR type use } and the unit is not water proof { though somewhat water resistant being wrapped in a silicone sleeve along with silicone plated buttons }. All of the cons are minor in my opinion and I am still very pleased with my purchase, I will be taking a deeper look into long term DVR recording capabilities it has as well as going over the manual to double check and see if there is a motion activated recording feature on the unit. I will update after more tests and informational reading. Hope this helps.
