  1. Lots of Alaskan guides and outdoorsmen have gone with the Glock 20 as their sidearm. There is currently a significant shift in attitudes regarding handgun defense against bears, including BIG bears. https://www.ammoland.com/2018/02/defense-against-bears-with-pistols-97-success-rate-37-incidents-by-caliber/#axzz5R5o1ckGT Here’s an interesting recent case of an Alaskan guide killing a coastal brown bear with his 9mm (why he’s marching clients through the brush with a 9 mm on his side is beyond me). https://www.americanhunter.org/articles/2016/8/10/alaska-outfitter-defends-fishermen-from-raging-grizzly-with-9mm-pistol/ Apparently, non-hollow point ammo, either hardcast or FMJ, is key in order to gain maximum penetration through heavy bone and solid muscle, but that shouldn’t be a surprising new fact. I’ve always loaded lead nosed FMJ ammo in my outdoors sidearms. Frankly, I’m still of the attitude that my sidearm is for fighting my way back to my rifle, which I never should have left behind to begin with. I prefer my 16” Marlin 336 in 30-30 over my Glock 20..........any day.

  2. Frankly, I suspect that may be the attitude of government wildlife and wild lands managers, primatologists, BFRO, and an increasing number of enthusiasts as well. I’ve arrived in that camp myself. Killing one and dragging out into the open isn’t my focus anymore. I want to see co-habitational study.......the Goodall type. Personally, I just want to observe them as much as possible.

  3. Sorry to hear of your troubles. I know what it’s like. When it rains, it’s Hurricane Flo. I’m not the killer I got you to imagine me as. For example, after all these years here in Alaska, I’ve still not killed a grizzly. I’ve backed up friends more than once, had close encounters with them, and have seen plenty of them. I just haven’t found “my” bear yet (came real close a few years ago.......). And Mrs. Huntster discourages me killing bears... ......black or brown. For most of my life I believed that to get official scientific recognition, and the only way to silence the skeptical morons, was to kill one. But I’ve come to despise the skeptics so much that I now want them (and the rest of society with them) to remain as ignorant as possible. Official recognition will likely be detrimental to them. Hell, I wish mankind didn’t know that I exist. I’m thinking about becoming an undocumented citizen.

  4. It's been one disaster after another around here. Fridge quits, then the stove, then the washing machine, now I have a sewage leak under the house. Have had a hard time finding a spare buck to spend on anything else. I'll be back one day though, ya'll can't get rid of me that easy. And I have a hard time believing you wouldn't put a bullet in one if you get a clean shot.

  5. That was just one of the reasons why I adopted the Glock 20 as my wilderness sidearm, even though it’s a significant reason. The polymer frame features a built in rail for a light or laser attachment. A $125 Streamlight attaches in seconds, or can be removed and attached to my Remington 870, 450 Marlin, or 16” Marlin 336 in seconds. The other reasons are: * A Glock 20 is a bargain. I bought mine new for $550. Add a light, tritium sights, comfortable IWB holster, cheap chest/bandolier holster, and four more magazines, and I was still under $1000. * The 10mm cartridge packs energy beyond that of the 357 mag, and nearly that of the 41 mag * The weapon is loaded with 16 rounds, and a quick magazine change provides 15 more * It’s significantly lighter than my S&W 629, even loaded with so many rounds, and it’s less bulky, too * It has a smooth DAO trigger that is easy to shoot well * Ammo selection is excellent, from anti-personnel Hornady Critical Defense to hard cast from Buffalo Bore and Underwood to FMJ ball * I carry an Underwood FMJ ball round in the pipe, and a quick magazine change specializes the next 15 rounds from anti-personnel to anti-bear/moose * And perhaps most important, it is easy and cheap to install top quality tritium sights

  6. Im thinking about the 460 rowland conversion for my 1911 and you can get a handle with light rail attached. https://clarkcustomguns.com/product/460-rowland-conversion-kit-for-1911/ https://www.ammoland.com/2014/04/recover-tactical-launches-cc3-1911-grip-and-rail-adaptor/#axzz5R32MlBAl I like wheel guns. But find one with a light rail in a acceptable griz country cartridge. The rowland claims 44 mag power which I call horse pucky. But its significantly higher than 45 acp. Im getting older.... Im gonna need bifocals soon. Searching for a mag lite in one hand and a gun in the other with something trying to get into the tent isnt my idea of a good time. I want it as one unit.
