  1. My birthday gift to myself was this bad boy, just because. Cold Steel boar spear "hiking staff". Doesn't everyone need one?

  2. I'm very interested in that area up Highway 108, especially at @ 4500'-6000' elevation in winter. East of that, at @ 8000' elevation in October, is the area of the Sierra Sounds events. I've run SSI queries on the seasonal differences in reports in the area, and sure enough, the winter reports are all on the western side of the Sierras and at @ snowline or just below. Looks like a great place to camp for a few weeks one winter........if I can find a legal place to do so that time of year..........

  3. I will save you the trouble! Western Loggers traditionally climbed trees to top them. Climbing spikes are worn with a J hook in the arch of the boot. Like a stirrup with a cowboy boot.

  4. Thank for the heads up. Firstlite has amazing clothing and as you mentioned is quite expensive. My backpack has parts of it that are in FirstLite's Cipher pattern. It really breaks up the image making it more difficult to see. I have a hat and hoodie in Sitka's sub-alpine pattern which I draped over my backpack to compare with Cipher. For my eyes, the sub-alpine pattern broke up the backpack a little better in the environment I was in. Both worked well.

  5. Kind of the opposite of a field trip, since this happened at home...but, A friend of ours sneaked over to our property and put our early Christmas present up while we were out. Still not used to seeing it as I come down our road.

  6. Hi Rod and others I have no doubt that BF exists, but I struggle to believe that it roams the woods of the UK. Has anyone got any links to evidence of this? I like the gazebo concept - very novel! I live near some woodland and regularly go there for walks, often in semi-darkness. Due to my interest in BF, I always find myself wishing the beast was there! I have heard some rustling and occasional knocking. I did see 2 deer recently.

  7. If i had a gun big enough to stop a charge? 10 yards (30 feet). Reports suggest I'd have about two seconds to hopefully be the last one standing- IF I didn't freeze. Without any means of defense? Any distance would find me hoping I wouldn't be seen as a threat.

  8. Anyone witnessed or heard BFs fighting? Do you think these are always spontaneous affairs, or do BFs have the intelligence and social structure to actually 'arrange' fights?
